IBCA/Subway Players of the Week: Jan. 1-6

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE IBCA: Northwestern sophomore Tayson Parker and Henryville senior Nick Walker each produced 40 points or more in a game, and the high-scoring duo headline the honorees in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
 
 
Parker and Walker are joined by Valparaiso junior Brandon Newman as boys’ recipients for the week of Jan. 1-6 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. 
 
 
Parker averaged 31.3 points and 7.7 rebounds over three games for the Northwestern boys (9-2). The 6-1 guard opened with 44 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals in an 83-73 loss to Lafayette Central Catholic. He followed with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a 55-50 triumph over Hamilton Heights. Parker then tallied 29 points with nine rebounds and four assists as the Tigers beat Clinton Central 57-47. Over the three games, Parker was 30-of-65 on field goals, 9-of-28 on 3-pointers and 25-of-31 on free throws.
 
 
The 6-3 Walker averaged 36.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in a pair of triumphs for the Henryville boys (11-3). He poured in 40 points with eight rebounds and seven assists in 68-49 victory over South Decatur. Walker followed with 32 points, five rebounds and three assists in just three quarters of playing time as the Hornets defeated Trinity Lutheran 85-44. Over both games, Walker hit 32-of-46 from the floor, 2-of-4 3-pointers and 6-of-6 from the line.
 
 
Newman averaged 35.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in sparking the Valparaiso boys (8-3) to two key victories. The 6-4 wing scored 32 points with 10 rebounds and two steals in a 69-41 decision over Portage. He followed with 39 points, 15 rebounds and two steals as the Vikings topped Penn 76-61. For the two games, Newman made 22-of-40 field goals, 5-of-10 3-pointers and 22-of-27 free throws.
 
 
This is the 10th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the sixth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its seventh season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "train hard and eat fresh."
