With the Inidiana high school boys basketball state tournament a week away, Jeff Schoenle and I will break down every sectional in the state. We start with the 1A class...
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 49 - Marquette Catholic. Six of the seven teams in this sectional are over .500, so it will not be an easy ride but I'm taking Donovan Garletts and Marquette Catholic to win this sectional. I would not be surprised if Kouts or even 21st Century Charter, behind the play of 2016 point guard Eugene German, wins this sectional. It helps that Maquette gets the bye in this seven team sectional.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 49 – Marquette Catholic. The only team with a bye also features the sectional’s best player in Providence commit Ryan Fazekas. The sharp shooting wing should be able to lead Marquette to the title, but don’t count out Kouts or defending sectional champ 21st Century.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 50 - Caston. A pretty even sectional, so I'm taking the best team with a bye and that happens to be Caston.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 50 – Tri-County. Coach Ty Scherer and Tri-County are the slight favorite in this sectional made up entirely of Midwest Conference opponents. The Cavaliers have the 16th average in the state. Caston could trip them up in a Friday night semifinal.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 51- Triton. I almost went with Culver because I think Trent Elliott is the best player in the sectional. I ended up going with Triton to win it though.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 51 – Triton. The 1A runner up from last season doesn’t have Clay Yeo, who is now at Valpo University, but they have won the last 6 sectionals and appeared in 4 of the last 6 state title games. Triton returns 3 starters from last year’s team, and Jason Groves has won 20 games each of the last 6 years.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 52- Blackhawk Christian. I like the way that Blackhawk Christian has been playing lately. Junior Joey Morlan has played very well for them this season. The potential second round match-up between Blackhawk and Elkhart Christian will likely decide the sectional.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 52 – Blackhawk Christian. The two top teams are Elkhart Christian and Blackhawk Christian, and after easy games on Wednesday night, the two should meet on Friday. Blackhawk junior Joey Morlan has deep range and the ability to go off on any given night. Blackhawk is tested with a schedule heavy on 3A and 4A teams.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 53- Lafayette Central Catholic. Covington might be 16-1, but I'm going with LCC (11-7) to win this sectional. 12 straight sectional championships for LCC and I'm not picking against them. Covington's Chandler Spring could make me eat my words.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 53 – Covington. Lafayette Central Catholic has won 12 straight sectionals, the longest streak in the state. Covington’s only loss was to 4A McCutcheon, a team who also beat LCC. It should be a great game in their opener Wednesday night. Look for a decidedly pro-Covington crowd and junior Chandler Spring to be enough to spur the Trojans to a victory.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 54- Rossville. Rossville and Carroll (Flora) are the only two teams in this sectional above .500. Rossville has long-range bomber Brandon Tonsoni. He's capable of hitting 8 or 10 three-pointers in a game.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 54 – Rossville. The Hornets are undefeated against possible sectional opponents. Shooting guard Brandon Tonsoni and do everything forward ET Brenneman lead the Hornets, who will have to get past host Tri-Central in Tuesday’s nightcap.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 55 - Liberty Christian. Unless 2011 Monroe Central graduate Logan Thomas suits up, I'm picking Liberty Christian. 2015 point guard Chris Nunn will be unstoppable in this sectional.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 55 – Liberty Christian. Talented guard Chris Nunn leads Liberty Christian into the sectional, where their road to the title game goes through 4-15 Daleville and 4-13 Southern Wells. Monroe Central is the best team on the other side of the bracket.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 56 - Blue River. I'm giving Blue River the advantage in this close sectional because they are hosting the sectional. I might go Seton Catholic otherwise.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 56 – Blue River Valley. A wide open field features 4 teams capable of cutting down the nets. The home court advantage may be just enough to bring the Vikings a title. A semifinal between BRV and Seton Catholic may be the marquee game of the sectional.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 57 - Clay City. Bloomfield is on a three game losing streak while Clay City gave Cloverdale a very tough game recently. Therefore, I'm going with Clay City.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 57 – Bloomfield. Bloomfield has the best draw, with a bye then a sub .500 team in the semifinals. Clay City could meet them in the finals, in a rematch of a 26-21 Bloomfield win from the regular season.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 58- University. This sectional would be Tindley's for the taking if they still had T.J. Henderson. They have really struggled, as you would expect, after Henderson transferred to Scecina.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 58 – University. An 8 team sectional could be decided by who wins a semifinal contest between Tindley and University. Tindley has struggled since losing TJ Henderson at the semester, and could be tired after playing 3 games in 4 days at the end of the regular season. Junior guard Tyler Diehl is the main man for University.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 59 - Greenwood Christian. Morgan Booher is a nice player for Greenwood Christian. I think he leads them to a sectional title.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 59 – Greenwood Christian. A balanced sectional could be won by any of 6 teams. Edinburgh defeated opening round opponent Morristown by 22 in late January. Greenwood Christian’s Lucas Peters averages 21 a game while shooting 46% from three. Baptist Academy and Indianapolis Lutheran won’t be easy outs either.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 60- Jac-Cen-Del. All of the decent teams are on one side of the bracket while all the struggling teams are on the other side. I will give Jac-Cen-Del the advantage since they received the bye.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 60 – Hauser. Whoever comes out of the bottom half of the bracket will win the title, the only question is who. Jac-Cen-Del will meet the winner of Oldenburg-Hauser in a semifinal. Hauser could get hot on Tuesday and stay hot through the rest of the week. Oldenburg sophomore point guard Matt Moorman might take a step into the spotlight.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 61- Orleans. 15-5 with the bye, I will take Orleans. Tritiny Lutheran has been playing well lately though.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 61 – Orleans. Orleans is a heavy favorite and drew a bye. Junior guard Cale Hall leads the Bulldogs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. Trinity Christian has the second best record and drew the other bye.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 62- Borden. Borden stayed close with a very good Clarksville team last time out. This is pretty much a toss-up between Rock Creek, Lanesville and Christian Academy in my view.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 62 – Lanesville. Borden lost to Lanesville, who lost to Christian Academy, who lost to Borden. This is anyone’s sectional to win. Lanesville sophomore Joe Ferree and Christian Academy sophomore Nic Reed lead a youth movement, while Garrett Vick is the lone returning starter from Borden’s state title team from last year. In a toss up, Lanesville will emerge from this sectional.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 63- Barr-Reeve. It will take a massive upset to keep Barr-Reeve from winning this sectional. They are head and shoulders above the competition.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 63 – Barr-Reeve. Barr-Reeve’s record over the last 5 years? Try 100-19. Add in the fact that they are the only school in the state allowing less than 40 points per game and you get one of the favorites in class 1A. Junior forward Addison Wagler provides inside scoring and 6’4 senior guard Micah Bullocks is deadly from outside. Longtime rival North Daviess awaits in the first round.
Trevor Andershock's Take:
Sectional 64- Northeast Dubois. All teams in the sectional are under .500. I will take Northeast Dubois because I like the name.
Jeff Schoenle's Take:
Sectional 64 – Northeast Dubois. In a sectional with no teams over .500, it could be the team who gets hot at the right time that takes the crown. The Jeeps of Northeast Dubois seem to be the team that is best equipped to make a run, but Tecumseh and Wood Memorial could very easily advance to regionals.
