Past Notes | 12-22-14 vs. Chatard The Valpo signee showed a bit more aggression, but still does not embrace physical play underneath and struggles to finish plays through contact. Runs the floor well for a seven footer and hit a couple face up jumpers tonight, but his presence on the glass was lacking. 10-5-14 Metro Indy Fall League Smits committed to Valparaiso on Monday. He started off slowly on Sunday, but they a technical foul for complaining of a non-call jump started his game. When he plays with strength and confidence, he is tough to deal with. He has not played with those two things with any consistency throughout his high school career. If Valpo can flip his aggression button to the on position, they will reap massive rewards. The lefty has a smooth jumper. He has a great touch on his hook shot. Ball State, Valpo, Indiana, UTEP are most active in the recruiting picture.
had a fantastic showing against Elliott Welmer. Welmer didn't do a bad job on Smits, but Derrik was on his game on Sunday. Smits ended up scoring 28 points in limited time. He has the best outside shot for a guy his age and size that I have seen. He also puts the ball on the floor extremely well for his size. He still lacks strength and complains about fouls often, but his offensive skill set is elite. High-MajorWeakness:ReboundingDefensePhysicality |
Scouting Report | Smits has not made that stride that you would expect this spring. He has the best outside shot for a guy his age and size that I have seen. He also puts the ball on the floor extremely well for his size. He still lacks strength and complains about fouls often, but his offensive skill set is elite. Rebounding and defense is a huge concern. |
