UMKC Offers Anthony Johnson

Decatur Central's Anthony Johnson picked up his first D1 offer on Sunday from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. UMKC tracked Johnson closely during the tournament and had been talking to him a lot leading up to the event. That is what led first year head coach Kareem Richardson to offer Johnson.

Johnson is working on qualifying right now, but it looks like he is on track. “I'm just going hard in the classroom trying to qualify then I'll worry about basketball,” said Johnson of his academics. Just in case he does not qualify, Johnson will visit Indian Hills Community College in Iowa.

Johnson visited Purdue and Indiana State a couple of weeks ago. Indiana State was high on Johnson, but they signed Hamilton Heights Alex Etherington. They likely will back off now that they have filled that spot.

In the last two games that I saw Johnson play this weekend he tallied 28 points in each game. He did not seem to have his trademark explosiveness this weekend. There were many times that I expected a big dunk from Johnson and he pulled back.

UMKC, Western Illinois and Long Island University were the schools recruiting Johnson the heaviest before this weekend. He plans to visit all three soon. He will take an official visit to UMKC when they set-up a date.

If his grades were better Johnson would have more and higher-level programs fighting over him. He has said in the past that he might go the junior college or prep school route if he qualifies and does not get an offer he really likes.

Johnson is playing with SYF Uptempo this spring. They made the 17u gold bracket semifinals this weekend before losing a close game to Mercury Elite. {/iACL}
