Steve McElvene (2014) Feature

At 6-11, Steve McElvene is hard to miss on the basketball court. College coaches have certainly noticed how he has played this spring. Here is a complete breakdown of Steve McElvene.

McElvene transferred from Alabama to New Haven High School last fall. He is on the move again this summer. He will be at Fort Wayne Wayne High School starting in June. He will get to play with his club teammate Justin Mitchell. “We have a few practices going on (in June). So that will be very good for me to meet my new teammates,” said McElvene.

He was only 6-1 to start his high school career. “Over the years I just started growing. It has been gradual.” said McElvene. Gradual but steady as McElvene is now 6-11 without shoes on. “I haven't grown since December but I'm hoping for a little bit more growth,” continued McElvene. Despite being so big, he does look young physically.

McElvene has seen his game really improve over the last year. “I think my post up moves got way better. My left hand. My dribbling skills. My leg power. A whole lot of stuff has changed (in the past year),” said McElvene. It seems like he is hungry to improve as well. “I'm working to get more moves, more spin moves and stuff like that,” said McElvene. He also said that he is trying to get his footwork like Caleb Swanigan's, the 6-8 post from Homestead in the 2016 class.

Right now, McElvene has his biggest impact on the glass and blocking shots on the inside. He has fantastic length. I would GUESS that he has somewhere in the range of a 7-3 or 7-4 wingspan. He doesn't have much lift off the floor, but that means he rarely goes for shot fakes as well. He had one block where an opponent drove baseline and was looking to finish with a big dunk. McElvene met him well above the rim and pinned the dunk attempt against the backboard.

He is a quiet and unassuming kid. He didn't even celebrate or say anything after the huge block. He just went on to the next play. I haven't seen McElvene show any signs of frustration on the court. He stays in the moment.

McElvene has really good hands. He seems to get every rebound that is in his area because of his strong hands. He gets most of his points from put-backs on the offensive glass. He needs to expand his post repertoire but right now he is effective with his put-back offense.

He runs decently for a guy his size. He definitely does not get baskets because he is out running people though. He does have some extra baby fat on him. McElvene does not move laterally very well right now. He struggles to defend ball screens. I'm not sure if losing the weight would help his quickness significantly or not.

McElvene has offers from Wright State, Morehead State and Chicago State. He also reports interest from Purdue and Xavier. He has not taken any visits yet but plans to in the near feature. “Sometime in the middle of June I'm going to start visiting all of those colleges,” said McElvene.

Players as big as McElvene are hard to find especially with competent skills. At this moment his skills are in the low-major plus/mid-major stretch category. But if he puts in the work and develops some post moves then he could easily jump to a mid-major plus quickly. {/iACL}
