James Blackmon Opens Recruitment

James Blackmon Jr. has de-committed from Indiana University. Blackmon committed to Indiana his freshman year at Fort Wayne Luers. He is now at Marion where this father took the head coaching position this spring.

There are reports that Blackmon and Indiana still have mutual interest, but that rarely works out after a de-commitment. I can't think of many times that a player has de-committed and then ended up at that school. It has happened a couple times in recent memory but it is extremely rare. Kyle Neddenriep reports that Blackmon will sign in November, so this process will happen at a very quick pace.

He will certainly be a hot commodity. Elite shooters are especially rare in high school basketball right now. There just are not many guys that can knock down shots consistently against top competition. He does not need time or space to get his shots off. His overall game has improved this spring and summer. Blackmon's handles have improved although they still need work. He got to the basket consistently against very good athletes in Nike EYBL play. He shot 54% from the field in EYBL because of his ability to get to the hoop. When he does drive, he drives to score and does not create very often for teammates right now. Some of that is the fact that his handles still need improvement.

The de-commitment hurts Indiana because they really need a shooter in the 2014 class. They are still in the picture for Park Tudor's Trevon Bluiett. Bluiett is also an elite shooter. If Indiana ends up with neither, it will be a big blow.
