Indiana Basketball Source looked at the top performers and surprises from the first week of action at the Metro Indy Fall League. Here are evaluations on 25 prospects in the 2015 class.
Matt Holba – 6-6 – F – Guerin Catholic – 2015
Holba was impressive in two games Sunday. He had a nice spurt where he and Derrik Smits exchanged baskets on a handful of trips down the floor. The Lehigh committed forward used his athleticism in usual fashion. He was constantly making plays above the rim. Holba hit a couple of three-pointers over Smits including a step back 3.
Carter Skaggs – 6-5 – SG – Logansport – 2015
Skaggs had a 49 point game where it seemed like he did not miss. The lefty was bombing shots from 25 feet out. He also scored a handful of baskets when he leaked out early on the defensive end. The defensive end is what will decide his college future. He takes play off on that end of the floor. Skaggs was in the zone on the offensive end Sunday night though. It was an impressive shooting display. NAIA to D2
Tylor Shane – 6-6 – PF – Ben Davis – 2015 -G3
Shane stood out with his strength and athleticism. He has grown an inch or two in the last year. He is extremely strong at 210 of muscle. Shane is a fantastic vertical athlete. Those factors make him a sleeper for the low-major level. His skill set needs to improve, but the fundamentals are there on his hook shot. He has a soft touch around the basket. Shane has a tendency to take longer than necessary gathering himself for a shot around the basket. Tylor Shane has solid academics as well. D2 to Low Major
Jason Solomon – 6-4 – SG – Ben Davis – 2015 -G3
Solomon has added about two inches from this time last year. He is a fantastic athlete as well. Solomon made a drive to the middle of the lane in the half court set then finished over the top of multiple defenders at the rim. Consistency is big for Solomon, his size, strength and athleticism are D1 though. NAIA to Low Major
Tahjai Teague – 6-8 – F – Pike – 2015
Pretty quiet opening weekend for Teague. He played within himself. He had games of 14 and 10. Teague looked like the normal Tahjai Teague overall. It doesn't look much has changed with Teague since July. Mid Major prospect.
Omari Robinson – 6-2 – SG – Crispus Attucks – 2015
Robinson showed off his athleticism in transition at the Metro Indy Fall League. He is strong and explosive at 6-1, 6-2. His open court ball-handling was decent. Nearly all of his scoring came at the basket. Robinson is a small college prospect.
Tiger Guillory – 6-5 – PF – Hamilton Southeastern – 2015
Always lists himself at 6-8, he is closer to 6-4, 6-5. It doesn't look like he has grown over the last year. One of the top leapers in the state of Indiana, Guillory can jump really easily. He has not been very productive in the past due to mediocre motor and limited skill set. He is playing football this year, so hopefully that will increase his motor/toughness. D3 to D2
Joey Morlan – 6-5 – F – Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian – 2015
A strong forward that has deep range. Morlan was solid on Sunday. He had games of 9 and 11, respectively. He doesn't look to put the ball on the floor very often. Morlan is physical enough to do a good job as a post defender. D2 to Low Major prospect.
Jake Mann – 6-1 – SG – Zionsville – 2015
Solid showing in the two games for Mann. He made open shots and competed on the boards. He is looking to put the ball on the floor a little bit more than he did last year. Mann is mainly a spot-up shooting though. He is a consistent shooter. Mann is hearing from DePauw and Rose Hulman the most right now. He is looking for either Pre-Med or Business as a college major. D3 to NAIA
Logan White – 6-4 – F – Avon – 2015
White continues to thin out physically and that has improved his athleticism. He is a strong rebounder with a good motor. Offensive skills are limited but they have shown improvement over the last few years. D3 to NAIA prospect.
Derrik Smits – 7-0 – C – Zionsville – 2015
Smits committed to Valparaiso on Monday. He started off slowly on Sunday, but they a technical foul for complaining of a non-call jump started his game. When he plays with strength and confidence, he is tough to deal with. He has not played with those two things with any consistency throughout his high school career. If Valpo can flip his aggression button to the on position, they will reap massive rewards. The lefty has a smooth jumper. He has a great touch on his hook shot.
Dion Harris – 6-4 – SF – South Bend Clay – 2015
Good size and strength for the forward position. He is a legit 6-4 if not 6-5. He showed some skill. He did not show explosive athletic ability. NAIA to D2 prospect.
T.J. Henderson – 6-0 – G – Indianapolis Scecina Memorial – 2015
Two solid games for Henderson on Sunday. The IUPUI commitment shot the ball extremely well from the outside. He also got to the basket off the dribble with ease. He is poised for a big season at Scecina.
Keegan Kollmeyer – 6-2 – G – Fishers – 2015
Great size at 6-2, 6-3 as well as a solid skill set. He can play either guard position. He's a good shooter from the outside. Fair athlete in terms of quickness and speed. D3 to D2 prospect.
Tanner Wise – 6-8 – C – Madison Grant – 2015
Big, strong center with good hands. He lacks mobility away from the basket. Wise can hit spot up jumpers to 20 feet. D3 to NAIA prospect.
Bryce Hudson – 6-3 – SF – Floyd Central – 2015
Transferred from Warren Central this year. Hudson is a fanastic leaper and overall athlete. His athleticism alone make him a small college prospect. His skill set needs to expand to be an impact player at the next level. D3 to D2 prospect.
Gary Bonds – 6-8 – PF – Indianapolis Scecina Memorial – 2015
Two solid games for the IUPUI bound post player. He was aggressively trying to finish above the rim in both games. It looks like he has more explosiveness in his jumping compared to the past. He might have added some muscle as well. Scecina could be a state contender especially if Bonds is strong and aggressive in the paint.
Filip Serwatka – 6-5 – F – Concord – 2015
Decent showing for Serwatka. Nothing new popped out in his game. He hit some spot-up 3s and finished well at the basket. His college potential boils down to his defensive ability/effort and how much of his offensive game translates to the next level. D2 to Low-Major prospect.
Darrian Ringo – 6-1 – PG – Brownsburg – 2015
Ringo's team only had five players for both games. That led to high scoring games for Ringo. He scored 42 and 33 points in the two games. He even admitted that he did not shoot very well after his 42 point game. So his numbers were definitely inflated. He did hit 10 threes although his percentage was not very high. He is a very good athlete in terms of quickness and leaping ability. D2 to Low Major prospect.
Kevin Riley – 6-4 – SF – New Palestine – 2015
Good length, excellent energy and motor on both ends of the court. Riley needs more consistency with his shot. He's a fair athlete that is best when rebounding and scoring around the basket. D3 to NAIA prospect.
Kyle Bumbalough – 5-9 – PG – New Castle – 2015
It looks like Bumbalough has grown to a true 5-foot-9 now. It also looks like he has added some strength. He played very aggressively in two games Sunday. He even shouldered a larger defender off of him on a drive that he finished with a 7 foot jumper. Bumbalough is a good outside shooter as well. Solid passer and decision maker. I believe, he wants to be Pre-Med. D3 to NAIA prospect.
Jordache Mavunga – 6-4 – SF – Brownsburg – 2015
It was not the strongest showing for Mavunga. He is a slasher, but he was trying to do too much which resulted in multiple turnovers and forced shots. He's a good leader, he has stepped up as the voice of Brownsburg's team this year. He is strong with a decent first step. Outside shooting, ball-handling and decision making need to improve. D3 to D2 prospect.
Bryce Moore – 6-2 – PG – Park Tudor – 2015
In the game that I watched Moore, he struggled with his shot. His team got off to a slow start and I think he forced some shots because of that fact. It looks like he bounced back well in the second game where he scored 18 points. Decision making needs to continue to improve to be a D1 player. D2 to Low Major prospect.
Dwayne Gibson – 6-4 – SF – Park Tudor – 2015
Gibson is in the best shape I have seen him. It has really helped his leaping ability. He is attempting above the rim plays which were not within his realm last year. He has always rebounded well and his improved conditioning has only helped that. Average outside shooter. He is looking to do more off the dribble now, but he doesn't create his own shot easily right now. NAIA to D2 prospect.
Sean McDermott – 6-6 – SG – Pendleton Heights – 2015
McDermott had 17 points against the talented team featuring Paul Scruggs, Kris Wilkes and Jason Solomon. It wasn't the Butler-bound's best game though. He had a few shots that were on target but missed. He was forced to create his own shot often against the athletes of Coach Peterson's team and it was not easy for McDermott. He's a true 6-6 and combined with his length, he is finishing at or above the rim with ease.
