Leo Svete is a 6'4 guard from Penn High School in northern Indiana. Svete plays his AAU basketball with Meanstreets. Meanstreets is a big-time team that is based out of Chicago. Here is what Leo had to say when we talked last week.
IBS: Do you have any offers yet?
Leo Svete: “Bucknell has offered me a full ride.”
IBS: Who else has shown a lot of interest?
Leo Svete: “My biggest ones right now are Wake Forest, I go see them this weekend (June 4th) for their elite camp. Drake, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Valpo, those are my top ones right now.
IBS: Will you be visiting anywhere else in June?
Leo Svete: “I’m going to Wake Forest on Friday so I’m going to try to visit Ohio on my way there or my way back.” Leo also said he would be stopping by North Carolina State after attending the Wake Forest elite camp.
IBS: What elite camps will you be attending?
Leo Svete: “Michigan June 11th, Western Michigan June 26th and Wake Forest June 4th.”
IBS: How do you like playing for Chicago-based AAU team Meanstreets?
Leo Svete: “I love it. I’m from Mishawaka so I had to drive up to Thornton High School (Harvey, IL) three times a week. That was a hassle but so far it has been great. I have gotten a lot better playing against that competition.”
IBS: How do you like playing for Tai Streets, the former Michigan and NFL wide receiver?
Leo Svete: “He’s a very tough coach, but if I can play for him I can play for anyone in the country. That guy, he is a drill sergeant. I love the way he pushes me and the way he gets on me. He is just trying to make me better and I know that.”
IBS: Are you working to improve any part of your game right now?
Leo Svete: “My weaknesses right now are my defense, being able to rebound, getting to the basket, being more of a versatile player so I can play 1-3 (point guard, shooting guard and small forward). That is what I’m working on right now, getting stronger. I would say my best part of my game is my jump shot. The weakest part of my offensive game is probably getting to the rim.”
IBS: What position are colleges telling you will play at the next level?
Leo Svete: “Wake Forest told me that they want me to play the 1(point guard). I played the 1(point guard) the whole tournament this past weekend. I actually played the 1 against the Eric Gordon All-Stars. I’ve been working really hard trying to play the 1. I play the 2 or the 3 with Meanstreets because Jalen (James) and Marcus (White) are our point guards along with Nick (Davidson, Andrean), of course.”
IBS: How much will the level of the school play in your college decision i.e. high-major vs. mid-major?
Leo Svete: “That is something I have been thinking about every day. Right now, of course I have all the mid-majors with a few majors showing interest. Right now, I’m going to keep my options open until it is the best time for me and my family to make the best decision.”
IBS: When is your ideal time to make a college decision?
Leo Svete: “I’m going to run with Meanstreets again next year. I have already decided that. EYBL (Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League) is a huge, huge thing. So I am hoping to make my decision after that summer going into my senior year after the EYBL.”
