Eric Hunter Commits

Indianapolis Tindley guard Eric Hunter has committed to Purdue. The 2018 guard took an official visit to the school a couple of weeks ago.

Earlier Monday, news broke that Eric Hunter was not going to take his official visit to Minnesota. That was a signal that he was ready to make a college decision. Hunter took an official visit to Ohio State two weeks ago, but the Buckeyes took two shooting guards/wings over the weekend in Luther Muhammad and Justin Ahrens.

Purdue is getting a 6-foot-3 guard that has proven to be a shot-maker throughout his high school career. He lit it up on the offensive end in Las Vegas at the adidas Summer Championships to end the travel season. Hunter did it through catch-and-shoot three-pointers along with plays off the dribble. He created more off the bounce than usual, although he didn’t get all the way to the basket much.

Hunter should fit well in the Purdue system. He’s better off the ball and coming off screens than most guards. In Purdue’s motion offense, Hunter is going to get plenty of outside shots. He won’t have to do much in the ball screen game at Purdue while the majority of other college programs use the pick and roll exclusively.

I expect him to be off the ball throughout his career. There will be times when he brings the ball up or pushes the ball in transition, but he won’t be a playmaker for others at a high level against Big Ten defenders. With his length, there should be a good chance that Hunter will be able to defend lead guards and shooting guards at the Big Ten level, especially when he adds strength.

Eric Hunter joins Trevion Williams and Emmanuel Dowuona in Purdue’s 2018 recruiting class. Williams and Dowuona are post players.

Nebraska, Minnesota, Xavier, Butler and then Ohio State, when Chris Holtmann took over there, recruited Eric Hunter hard throughout his high school career.
