In the first night of the J&C Hoops Classic, Benton Central took on Twin Lakes while Frankfort battled Lafayette Jeff. Here is a look at how those games went down.
It was a three point barrage from Lafayette Jeff to begin the game. Jeff hit seven three-pointers in the first quarter with junior David Hanyard hitting five of them. Hanyard was 5-7 from three-point range in the opening period.
Frankfort stayed in the game thanks to the play of Carter Taylor and Jarrod Smith. Taylor finished the first half with 11 points and five rebounds. The junior forward played well in the paint as well as on the perimeter. Smith created much of the offense for Frankfort with his penetration where he either scored himself or set up others.
Lafayette Jeff junior guard Cortiz Buckner gave Lafayette a jump start off the bench to keep the offense rolling in the second quarter. He scored 11 points in the second period. He was constantly slashing to the basket for easy looks. He also spotted up for a couple of good looks from the outside.
Lafayette Jeff hit nine of 18 three-pointers in the first while Frankfort attempted just five. The Hot Dogs did hit three of their attempts though.
The second half was more of the same with David Hanyard and Darian Collins proving much of the offense for Lafayette Jeff. Collins scored nine points in each half for 18 in the game.
It seemed like Frankfort would make a run at some point in the second half. The Jeff lead fluctuated between 10-15 points for most of the half. Despite the efforts of Jarrod Smith and Carter Taylor, Frankfort could under seven points until the final few seconds.
Jeff gave Frankfort a chance with its shot selection and poor free throw shooting in the final few minutes. A technical on David Hanyard in the final minute also aided Frankfort's late comeback. It all ended up being too little, too late.
Lafayette Jeff won the game 71-66. Lafayette Jeff will play Twin Lakes on Friday at 6:00 PM while Frankton takes on Benton Central on Thursday at 6:00 PM.
