Southport entered Friday's game with a 4-2 record while Bloomington North was just 1-3. Southport's center Joey Brunk sprained his ankle against East St. Louis last weekend. He was unable to play against Bloomington North.
Both teams were willing to play fast in the first quarter. Paul Scruggs was the hot hand early for Southport. He scored 14 points in the opening period on 4-4 from three point range. Bloomington North didn't back down. Riley Crean and Malik Laffoon each played well to begin the game.
The pace slowed a bit in the second half, but Southport's pressure took a toll on Bloomington North. The North turnovers led directly to a handful of buckets for Southport in the quarter. The Southport lead stretched to nine points.
Again, Bloomington North did not go away. Thanks to late free throws, North cut into the lead and only trailed by five points at halftime.
Bloomington North stayed within a dozen points most of the second half. They even started the second half with four quick points in order to cut Southport's lead to one point. North never took the lead though.
The outside shooting of Jamie Burnett and the free throw shooting of Harold Bennett helped Southport hold the lead in the second half. Bennett only hit five of ten from the line, but it was enough to keep the separation against North.
Scruggs was strong throughout the game. He finished with a game-high 26 points. He also added six rebounds in the game.
2016 guard Malik Laffoon played well for Bloomington North especially in the fourth quarter when he was more aggressive on the offensive end. He finished with a team-high 17 points. Eight of his points came in the fourth quarter.
2018 wing Musa Jallow scored 11 points on 3-4 shooting from the field. He was just 5-11 from the free throw line though. Jallow did have six rebounds and three assists as well.
Southport won by the final score of 63-51.
