Two Indianapolis schools traveled to Marion in order to face off. Southport was missing Butler signee Joey Brunk once again as he recovers from a sprained ankle. He should return to the court soon. Indianapolis Tech's only loss of the season came at the hands of Anderson.
Florida State signee C.J. Walker dominated early in the game. He scored nine points in the opening period and also had two assists. His play pushed Tech to a commanding lead early.
Southport bounced back behind the play of 2017 guard Paul Scruggs. Southport outscored Tech 21-11 in the second period. A majority of Southport's offense was created in a result of Tech turning the ball over.
Walker and Scruggs created the offense for their respective teams nearly the whole way. Scruggs did a good job of attacking whenever possible. That led to the junior shooting 12 free throws in the game. Walker also got to the line 12 times.
Tech led most of the second half by a margin between three and six points. Southport took over the lead midway through the fourth quarter and it was back and forth the rest of the way.
The final 50 seconds of regulation were really interesting with Ernest Myles making a shot in the lane while getting fouled. The free throw would tie the game but he missed it. Southport grabbed the rebound, but turned the ball over and Tech converted at the basket to take a lead. Southport came right down and made a three pointer to take the lead back with 28.7 seconds left.
Walker was fouled as he was driving to the basket on the next possession for Tech. He made both free throws to tie the game.
Freshman Harold Bennett made big plays late in the game for Southport. He attacked the basket after Walker's free throws and converted a reverse layup to give Southport the lead with 10 seconds remaining. Bennett scored 12 of his 18 points after the third quarter.
Walker wasn't done yet. He took the inbound pass and went coast to coast for Tech to tie the game before regulation expired.
Senior wing Chris King had an excellent overtime for Tech. He scored nine points in the extra period. His production gave Tech an early lead in overtime.
Scruggs wouldn't let Southport go away. His steal and dunk tied the game with just over a minute left. It was King with the deciding play though. He stole a Scruggs inbound pass and converted at the basket to give Tech the lead. Tech didn't surrender the lead after that point.
Tech won 80-77 with CJ Walker scoring 32 points and Chris King adding 21. Paul Scruggs had 33 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Harold Bennett scored 18 for Southport.
