Bishop Dwenger entered Monday's game with just a 1-4 record but the four losses came by an average of six points. Bedford North Lawrence was in a similar position at 2-5. Its lone blow loss was to Bloomington South.
Senior guard Sam Royal scored seven early points for Dwenger. His scoring along with the shooting of Campbell Donovan pushed Dwenger to a first quarter lead.
Braxton Day came into the game averaging 26 points a game. He had a slow start to the game, but he broke out during the second period. He scored 10 points in the quarter while getting Bedford North Lawrence back in the game.
BNL also received a boost from freshman McCall Ray in the second quarter. He didn't play in the first period then he dished out a couple assists and scored four points in the second.
Bedford North Lawrence started the second half slowly as well. Ray was there to create the spark once again. He entered the game and assisted Braxton Day on a layup. Then he stole the ball while pressuring the ball handler. Ray took the ball and scored immediately.
It was a close game until the end. The very end...when Braxton Day slashed to the hoop. He converted the play and was fouled during his attempt. The layup tied it and then his free throw gave BNL the lead with 9.4 seconds left in the game.
A final shot by Bishop Dwenger was no good and Bedford North Lawrence walked away with a 57-56 victory. Braxton Day finished the game with 25 points for BNL. Sam Royal led Dwenger with 18 points.
