Mishawaka Marian traveled to Warsaw on Tuesday night. Marian entered the game with the record of 11-2 while Warsaw was 12-0. It shaped up to be a good game on paper and it lived up to the expectations.

It didn't look like it was going to be a close game during the first quarter though. Warsaw jumped out to an early lead behind the play of 2017 guard Kyle Mangas and senior Paul Marandet. Mangas provided the scoring punch while Marandet set up the other Tigers with three assists in the opening quarter.

“I just tried to come in aggressive and make shots, take shots when I was open or distribute to teammates when they were open,” said Kyle Mangas.

Marian flipped the script in the second period. After giving up 18 points in the first quarter, Marian's defense clamped down in the second. The Marian defense forced a handful of Warsaw in the stanza to help get Marian back into the game.

Marian senior guard Jake Whitfield also started to step up in the second quarter. He began to be more aggressive with the ball. He scored five points in the period.

Marian tied the game with the first points of the second half. The points came from Jair Rodgers. The senior guard began the game scoring over 21 points per game. He had just five in the opening half. The attention of the Warsaw defense was focused on him.

It was a tight game throughout the second half. The largest lead was 36-30 in Warsaw's favor. That was the score before Rodgers drained a three pointer off the dribble for Marian. Warsaw then melted a couple minutes off the clock before missing a shot. Rodgers drilled another three to tie the game with 35 seconds left.

Warsaw took the final shot as time expired but it missed. The game was headed to overtime.

The extra period was controlled by Warsaw from start to finish. It was started by a three point play by Jeremy David. The next possession Mangas buried a three pointer. Marian was only able to manage a bucket from Whitfield as Warsaw pulled away for the 47-38 victory.

“We're one of the best defensive teams in the state of Indiana,” said Paul Marandet. “[Jair] Rodgers came in averaging 33.5 points a game over the last two games and we shut him down to 13 [points] on 4-13 shooting.”

Kyle Mangas led Warsaw with 20 points while Paul Marandet filled the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds and six assists. Jeremy David added seven points and eight rebounds.

Jair Rodgers led Marian with 13 points. Jake Whitfield scored 11 in the loss.
