Michigan City traveled west to Chesterton on Thursday night for a Duneland Athletic Conference tilt. It was a key game as both teams sat at 1-3 in the conference and didn't want to drop any further.
Chesterton started the game with a three-pointer, it was a sign of things to come. The Trojans knocked down seven first half three-pointers. It seemed like every Chesterton player hit a triple in the first half. Sophomore Austin Peterson came off the bench in the second quarter and scored 10 points including back-to-back three-pointers.
Michigan City head coach John Boyd was looking for energy and consistent play especially in the first half.
“We had a really flat first half. I'm just really flabbergasted by the way we came out,” said Boyd.
The most consistent play for Michigan City in the opening half came from senior center Robert Howard. He had six points and four rebounds in the first half. Chesterton held Michigan City to 22 points in the first 16 minutes.
Chesterton held a 15 point lead at intermission. The Trojans extended the lead early in the third quarter. Senior guard Rhyss Lewis was limited to four points in the first half. He started to break out for Chesterton in the third period. He tallied eight points in the stanza.
ShanQuan Hemphill has been injured of late. Thursday night was his second game back from the injury. He was non-existent in the first half for Michigan City, but like Lewis, he had a big second half. He helped Michigan City start chopping into Chesterton's lead.
Michigan City increased its pressure in the fourth quarter to attempt a comeback. The Wolves were able to force nine Chesterton turnovers in the period. The once 18-point lead for Chesterton was cut to five with one minute to play in the game.
It was the closest Michigan City was able to get. Lewis helped Chesterton gain its composure down the stretch. Austin Peterson also hit important free throws for Chesterton late in the game.
Chesterton won going away, 66-55. Rhyss Lewis finished with 22 points and Austin Peterson added 13 in the victory. 2017 shooting guard Dante Combs led Michigan City with 14 points. Hemphill added 13 points while Troy Jones had 12 in the loss.
