Carmel entered Friday night's game winners of six of its last seven games. The Greyhounds have been playing well of late. On the other hand, Hamilton Southeastern was fighting an uphill battle before the game even started as Zach Gunn, Brennan Schofield and Connor Rotterman were sidelined with injury for the game.
Early on, it looked like the lack of Gunn and Schofield in the post wasn't going to be a problem for Hamilton Southeastern as senior Jaylon Tapplar stole the show. Tapplar was averaging five points per game before Friday night. He doubled that total in the first quarter for Hamilton Southeastern. Tapplar was scoring from the post and stepped out for a long-range, two pointer as well. The student section loved the breakout performance by the senior.
In the second quarter, Carmel turned up the defensive pressure. Preston Flamion and Sterling Brown were able to create a couple of turnovers which helped the Greyhounds take the upper hand in the game. The pair scored nine points in the period to go along with their defense.
It was a tight, low-scoring game throughout. The offenses were not clicking for either team. Unofficially, Carmel shot 37% from the field while Hamilton Southeastern shot a higher percentage from the field, but turned the ball over more frequently.
It was a one-possession game a few times in the final couple minutes of the game, but Carmel converted free throws down the stretch to keep Hamilton Southeastern at bay. Carmel was 8-9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Sterling Brown converted all four of his free throws in the period.
Carmel escaped with the 47-42 victory. Sterling Brown led Carmel with 14 points. Preston Flamion added 12 points while Garrett Covington finished with 10. The Greyhounds are now 12-6 on the season.
Hamilton Southeastern was led by Jaylon Tapplar's 14 points. Greg Miller contributed 10 points in the losing effort.
