Indianapolis Manual traveled to the west side of Indy to face Covenant Christian on Tuesday evening. After starting the year 12-1, Manual had lost four of its last six games entering Tuesday night. Covenant Christian lost to University in its last game but had an overall record of 13-7. It shaped up to be a very competitive game.
Covenant Christian controlled the game in the early minutes. Jordan Webb and Kierson Watts were in attack mode from the get-go. The pair combined for 15 points in the first period. Junior post player Jaron Glenn was the only bright spot early for Manual. He scored six points around the basket to keep Manual in the game.
Starting the second quarter, Manual went on an 8-0 run to cut the Covenant Christian lead to one point. They turned up the defensive pressure with traps and knocked down outside shots. Courvoisier McCauley stepped up for Manual in the period. The junior guard was scoring 27 points per game heading into Tuesday. After only scoring two points in the first quarter, McCauley tallied nine in the second.
After trailing the entire first half, Manual's first lead of the night came with under six minutes left in the third quarter. It was a hectic period, but it wasn't very high scoring. Hanniah Davis scored eight of Covenant Christian's 10 points in the quarter.
It was all square heading into the fourth quarter.
Courvoisier McCauley played well in the third and fourth quarters. His efficiency was fantastic after the first period. In the fourth quarter, McCauley scored 10 points on 4-4 shooting from the field. His play pushed Manual's lead to 53-47 late in the game.
Covenant Christian didn't go quietly into the night. The duo of Webb and Watts made big plays getting Covenant Christian back into the game. It was an and-1 play by Watts one time down then Webb hit a big-time, pull-up three-pointer to cut Manual's lead to one with just over 90 seconds remaining in the game.
It was a one-point game when Manual took the ball out of bounds with 44 seconds left. Manual put the ball into McCauley's hands and let him avoid defenders for more than 30 seconds. Covenant Christian finally gave a foul once he gave up the ball with just over 10 seconds left.
Keyshawn Bess was the Manual player heading to the line for the important one plus the bonus free throw. The senior guard had played well throughout the game for Manual. He finished with 14 points. Unfortunately, it wasn't 15 or 16 because he missed the front-end of the bonus.
Covenant Christian rushed the ball up the court with 10 seconds left and trailing by one point. The first attempt was an off-balanced shot that might have been blocked. The shot fell into the hands of senior Max Leary. He put the ball back up from about five feet away and it found the bottom of the net as the buzzer sounded! It gave Covenant Christian the 56-55 victory.
2018 guard Jordan Watts finished with 22 points to led Covenant Christian. Kierson Watts added 15 points to the cause while Hanniah Davis finished with 13. Webb and Watts each had eight rebounds as well.
2017 guard Courvoisier McCauley led all scorers with 27 points in the loss. Keyshawn Bess added 14 points while Jaron Glenn chipped in 11 points.
