Lafayette Central Catholic traveled to Indianapolis to face its catholic rival, Cathedral, on Thursday evening. It was the last game of the regular season for both teams. LCC will open sectional play with Clinton Prairie. Central Catholic has won 14 straight sectionals. Cathedral will play North Central in the opener of sectional 10.
Cathedral applied full-court pressure and jumped all over Lafayette Central Catholic early in the game. Cathedral held a 13-2 lead with a blink of the eye. Cathedral was forcing live ball turnovers and scored immediately off many of them. It was seniors Eron Gordon and Matt Paligraf leading the way for the Irish. The duo scored 14 points in the opening quarter.
It looked like Lafayette Central Catholic was going to be run out of the gym after Cathedral held a 26-8 lead after the first quarter. That wasn't the case on Thursday night. Ben Tharp was able to knock down four three-pointers in the second quarter to get Lafayette Central Catholic back into the game. He was 4-4 from beyond the arc in the quarter after being scoreless in the first quarter.
Despite Tharp's shooting, Cathedral was still ahead by 12 points at the half. Cathedral used a balanced attack in order to maintain its lead. It seemed like everyone chipped in during the second half. Jordan Walker, James Franklin, Matt Paligraf, Jarron Coleman, Tra Landers, Austin Kendrick, Danny Goggans - they all were in the mix for Cathedral.
Cathedral pulled away in the fourth quarter for the 86-64 victory. Eron Gordon had a game-high 21 points. Jarron Coleman added 14 and Tra Landers had 13 points in the win. Ben Tharp had 19 points to lead Lafayette Central Catholic.
Cathedral finished the regular season with a record of 17-5 and a seven-game winning streak. Lafayette Central Catholic ended up at 13-9.
