In what was one of the most anticipated matchups Tuesday night across the state, a pair of Mr. Basketball frontrunners squared off in Lawrence Central's Kyle Guy and Tech's CJ Walker. While both had big games, it was the rest of the Lawrence Central Bears that left their imprint on the game and help secure a big win in opening round sectional play.
Tech jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead early on and looked to be the part of the aggressor for the first few minutes. Lawrence Central would come back to tie the game at five, and then had the momentum shift drastically on the back of two big plays. First, Lawrence Central grabbed a rebound and threw the ball ahead to Tyrelle Walker, who finished with a huge slam to ignite the crowd. After another Tech miss, Kyle Guy snared the rebound and found a wide open lane, where he laid it in the hoop, forcing a Tech timeout.
Mekhi Biffle was also a huge part of the first quarter run, which by the end of the period had reached 20-4 in favor of the Bears. Biffle and fellow senior guard Kyle Guy combined for 14 points in the quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same, as LC scored the first seven points of the period, turning every Tech turnover and missed shot into points, and often quickly via the transition game. Guy and Biffle were again major catalysts for the Bears, as the backcourt duo combined for 17 of LC's 21 second quarter points. None of those points, however, were more spectacular than the final two.
After a Tech layup with just over five seconds remaining, Kyle Guy took the inbounds pass and charged up the court. Weaving in and out of seemingly every Tech defender, and a few of his teammates as well it seemed, Guy was able to beat the horn with a double clutching finish at the rim, giving the Bears a 21 point halftime advantage.
Lawrence Central left no doubt about a Tech comeback attempt, as Al Gooden's squad opened the second half on a 14-5 run, stretching their lead to 30 and beyond as Guy and Biffle again made play after play. CJ Walker, who had 12 points at the half and 20 after three quarters, was hounded all over the floor by LC point guard Daveon Bell and backup KJ Davis, making life difficult for the Florida State signee and having to work hard for each and every one of his points.
Tech was able to force some Lawrence Central turnovers in the fourth, but the margin was too great to overcome for the Titans. Lawrence Central cruised to a 22 point victory and a date with Lawrence North in the sectional semifinals.
