Romeo Langford entered Tuesday night's game against Carmel only 17 points behind Chad Hunter on the New Albany career scoring list. Last week, Langford said the record would mean a lot, but he wasn't going to go out focused on breaking the record. Here's a closer look at Langford's night against a tough Carmel defense.
It was a rather slow start for Langford, not scoring a point until the 3:25 mark in the first quarter when he was able to get and-one in transition. Carmel focused on Langford forcing him into tough shots and in most times forcing him to pass. Romeo had eight points at the end of the first quarter.
Langford scored 12 points in the first half, most impressively on a highly contested, fadeaway 3-point shot from the corner in the first period. A bad shot for most, Langford makes it look routine.
In the second half, Romeo had every answer for the Bulldogs. He hit a critical step-back three-pointer in the fourth quarter to bring them within four at 42-38. With five minutes remaining in the game, Romeo took a crucial charge which would have led to a Carmel easy two. On the next possession, he grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed three-pointers. He took one dribble and exploded off two feet for a two-hand jam while getting fouled. Romeo missed a deep three at the buzzer which would have won the game. However, the game went to overtime.
Overtime was very slow, however with 29.1 seconds left Romeo had an and-one layup to tie the game. He hit the free throw, along with two more on the next possession. On a night where he had zero open looks and worked for every point he scored, Romeo finished with 28 points and seven rebounds. Somehow, that is a below average night for the junior guard.
New Albany will face Evansville Bosse (6-1) on Thursday in New Albany.
