Avon entered Friday night’s game against Fishers on a four-game losing streak. But the Orioles played with the confidence of a team on a winning streak on this night.
Both teams shot really well to begin the game. Avon racked up 13 points in the first 150 seconds of the game. The quick start didn’t stop Avon from going to its bench early. Avon’s Jason Young played 10 players early in the game.
“When you’ve lost as many games in a row as we have, we just said everyone deserves a chance to play,” Jason Young told Indiana Basketball Source. “Sometimes we played our horses too long and it hurt us in the fourth quarter in some of those games. So, that was a goal tonight to get everyone out in every quarter.”
The high-level shooting continued throughout the game for the Orioles. Senior Gavin Collier led the way, especially early, with his outside shooting. He scored 14 of his 23 points in the first half. Collier connected on 7 of 11 from three-point range.
Fishers led most of the second quarter before Hayden Crowder end a triple late in the half to give Avon the halftime lead. Fishers stayed with a couple of possessions throughout the third quarter before Avon opened up a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. Fishers never led in the second half.
Avon received a big night from senior Andrew Short as well. His playmaking created easy opportunities for his teammates all game long. Short racked up 10 assists by the count of Indiana Basketball Source.
It wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops for Avon. Fishers was able to force Avon into 21 turnovers. When Fishers was playing its best, Avon was turning the ball over in bunches. Jamil Turner-Hall and Armaan Franklin each had three steals for Fishers.
“I was shocked that we would turn it over 20+ times and win this game,” said Young of his team’s miscues.
Avon walked away with the 72-64 victory.
Gavin Collier had a game-high 23 points. Hayden Crowder and Evan Lowden had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Andrew Short contributed nine points, 10 assists, seven rebounds but also six turnovers. Sophomore Zach Rinehart had seven points.
Fishers was led by Jamil Turner-Hall’s 13 points but he was just 3-13 from the field. He did have five assists as well. Armaan Franklin and JT Counts each had 10 points. Connor Washburn and Willie Jackson each added nine points.
