The second Indianapolis City Tournament semifinal grabbed most of the headlines, but Cathedral and Howe played a hotly contested game as well. Here’s how it went down.
Howe and Cathedral struggled to make shots early in the game. The only player that didn’t have a problem knocking down shots was Cathedral’s James Franklin. The sophomore scored 18 points in the first half including 4-6 from three-point range.
Junior forward Tony Hopkins was a major part of Howe’s early success. He attacked the basket early and often. Hopkins scored 10 points in the first half as Howe led by seven.
Cathedral senior Tra Landers was aggressive in the second half. He was in the middle of the Howe zone to start the half. He was able to get a couple of easy looks in the lane. From there, he was attacking the basket, rebounding and setting up his teammates.
Howe led most of the game. Cathedral took the lead early in the fourth quarter and didn’t relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Howe still had plenty of opportunities to take the lead. Howe received a big boost with the play of Rashawn Rush off the bench. He scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.
The final chance for Howe came as time expired and Jefty Sultzer was able to get a clean look from the top of the key. It was off the mark, and Cathedral walked away with the victory.
James Franklin finished with a game-high 23 points. Tra Landers recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in the win.
Tony Hopkins had 16 points in the loss.
Cathedral will play Manual on Monday at Arsenal Tech for the City Tournament championship.
