Cathedral and Manual saw their Indianapolis City Tournament fates be decided on the last possession of their respective games on Saturday. Howe missed a shot at the buzzer that would have beat Cathedral while Manual used a 30-footer from Courvoisier McCauley to make the title game.

By most accounts, this game was supposed to be close. John Harrell’s algorithm predicted a one-point victory for Cathedral. The Irish had experience on their side. Many Cathedral players were in the championship game against Tech last season.  This was Manual’s first City title game appearance since the 1997-1998 season.

Cathedral was flaming throwing from behind the arc to start the game. The Irish connected on their first five shots and they were all three-pointers. Although it was first three minutes of the game, it made Manual force the issue on the offensive end more than usual. That resulted in some bad shots, turnovers and fouls.

Fouls were a major issue for Manual. All of its main players were in foul trouble before halftime. Manual’s star, Courvoisier McCauley, picked up his fourth foul with 30 seconds left in the first half. That really put Manual behind the eight ball in its comeback efforts.

Usually, teams that shoot really well for a quarter or half come back to earth later. That wasn’t the case with Cathedral. Jarron Coleman was 4-5 from three-point range on his way to 22 points. Cathedral recorded a True Shooting Percentage of 73.7% for the game. The Irish went 9-13 from behind the arc in the game.

McCauley was the bright spot for Manual. Despite the four fouls, he played really well in the second half. McCauley finished with 31 points on 12-23 shooting. He is averaging 30 points per game this season.

Cathedral maintained, at least, a 15-point lead throughout the second half. It was an impressive performance by the Irish from start to finish and up and down the roster.

Cathedral won 91-67. The Irish captured their 14th City Tournament title. It was the third championship for head coach Jason Delaney. He won two as the leader of Arsenal Tech.
