A treat for fans of high school basketball is getting to see teams from different parts of the state play each other. Better yet when it's two quality teams, as it was on Saturday night when Crown Point headed down to Indianapolis to battle Warren Central. Behind the play of senior forward Paul Minor, the Warriors emerged with yet another impressive win to add to their resume.
DePauw signee Ken Decker game out of the gates hot for Crown Point, scoring nine points in the first quarter as the Warrior defense was focused on Sasha Stefanovic. Decker hit a pair of threes in the opening burst, which allowed some space for 6'7 Andrew Kenneally to operate on the block, as Kenneally notched five points in the first quarter. Matching Decker, however, was Mack Smith, who converted four of his first five attempts from the floor for nine first period points as well.
The Warriors opened up on a 9-2 run to start the second, with Paul Minor making a pair of threes in the run. Sasha Stefanovic quickly erased that with a 7-0 run of his own, knotting the score at 24. With the clock winding down, Warren Central held for a final look at the basket. The ball found its way to Mack Smith on the wing, who shot faked and got Stefanovic in the air. Smith leaned into Stefanovic and drew the foul. With just one-tenth of a second showing on the clock, Smith made all three from the stripe to give the Warriors a six-point lead and momentum heading to the locker room.
The third quarter was where Warren blew the game open. A 13-4 run to start the second half gave the Warriors a 15 point advantage. Key in that run was David Bell, as the sophomore had a tip dunk to ignite the crowd and was all over the floor defensively, limiting the touches of Sasha Stefanovic, getting deflections, and cleaning the glass. Paul Minor would add two more three-pointers in the third, as the lead swelled to 16 for Warren Central at the end of the quarter.
Crown Point made a final surge in the fourth. Warren Central began to work on the clock early in the period, looking to limit possessions for their opponents. The Bulldogs would make the most of what they had, with Stefanovic working his way to the free throw line and converting. Following a Mack Smith technical foul, Ken Decker would convert two free throws to get the margin into single digits, but that would be as close as Crown Point would get the rest of the game. Paul Minor and David Bell would snare any Crown Point miss, and Warren would emerge with a twelve point victory.
