Zionsville has not won a sectional during the class basketball era. The Eagles are one step closer to changing that after defeating Logansport on Friday night.
The story of the game was Zionsville’s outside shooting. Isaiah Thompson and Riley Bertram found their shooting rhythm in the second quarter. The duo knocked down five three-pointers in the second period. That shooting gave Zionsville a nine-point advantage at the half.
Zionsville maintained a lead throughout the third quarter. Logansport cut Zionsville’s lead to four points early in the fourth period. Thompson stepped up to hit a triple to slow Logansport’s momentum. The sophomore was fantastic all game as Purdue’s Matt Painter watched. He finished with 27 points.
Logansport struggled to get clean looks against Zionsville’s zone defense. Matt Jennings was able to get into the teeth of the defense a handful of times that led to buckets for himself and Hunter DeHaven. DeHaven, a senior forward, did a great job of finishing around the basket. He finished with 16 points.
Down the stretch, Thompson and Bertram continued to make plays plus Zionsville knocked down free throws. The steady offense from Zionsville and Logansport’s inability to hit deep shots kept Zionsville’s lead safe.
The Eagles won 66-57. Thompson led all scorers with 27. Bertram finished with 15, while Tyler Leedy had 10 points.
Logansport’s season ends with a record of 23-2. Matt Jennings finished his high school career with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jalen Adaway was held to seven points in the loss.
