Zionsville defeated Carmel to open the 2017-2018 high school season Tuesday night. It was the first win for Zionsville against Carmel since the 2009-2010 season.

Key Play or Stretch

After John Michael Mulloy dominated the first quarter, Isaiah Thompson got things going to begin the second quarter. He scored eight points to pump energy into Zionsville. Thompson helped ice the game with his free throw shooting. The junior guard made 18 of 19 free throws in the game.

Standout Players

Along with Thompson, Zionsville received a big performance from senior Riley Bertram. He had a couple individual spurts throughout the game. A major one occurred in the third period. He scored six points when it looked like Carmel was starting to get an offensive rhythm.

Butler University commitment John Michael Mulloy was excellent from start to finish. Carmel played through him at the top of the key and elbow all game. He made a living attacking off the dribble where he either scored or drew fouls on Zionsville’s front line. Mulloy put a handful of Zionsville players in foul trouble through his drives. He finished with 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Surprises

Shooting - Carmel’s inability to knock down three-pointers and Zionsville’s lack of attempts from the perimeter. The Greyhounds went 5-21 from deep while Zionsville only took nine shots from behind the arc. Zionsville also shot 36 free throws compared to Carmel’s 18. That number was inflated a bit late, but Zionsville lived at the line in the second half.
