Jeffersonville went 14-11 last year. The Red Devils began the journey to improve that record with a 72-56 win over Southport Wednesday night.
Key Play/Stretch
Bailey Falkenstein committed his third foul with three minutes left in the first quarter. Most coaches would have buried Falkenstein on the bench. Joe Luce is in his 19th year as a high school head coach and decided to maximize Falkenstein by playing throughout the first half. That was key because Falkenstein was the most productive offensive player for Jeffersonville, especially in the first half.
Standout Players
Jeffersonville relied on a core group of Falkenstein (24 points), Jacob Jones, Tre Coleman and Jaden Coleman. The latter three players each scored 14 points while making plays on the glass and on the defensive end as well. The Coleman brothers made every paint shot tough for Southport.
Brian Miller gave Southport a perimeter threat in the first half. He tallied 10 points in the first half. Chaz Hinds provided Southport with inside production but was hampered by foul trouble. Hinds finished with 14 points.
Surprises
Southport’s zone forced Jeffersonville into a lot of turnovers while only allowing Jeff to hit two three-pointers. Brevin Jefferson was able to get five steals for Southport. But with Hinds limited to 15 minutes and Matt Munoz out due to injury, Jeffersonville dominated around the basket. Jeff didn’t miss a two-pointers until the final second of the third quarter.
