In a non-conference matchup Saturday night, Pike used a dominant third quarter to wrestle the lead away from Pendleton Heights and never look back on their way to a 59-49 victory.
The Red Devils and Arabians went back and forth in the first quarter, but Justin Shupe’s pull-up three at the first quarter buzzer would provide the Arabians with a three-point lead that would last through the remainder of the first half. Pike would remain close thanks to the shooting of
Brandon Vernon. The 6’4 junior was perfect on his first three three-point attempts on his way to a game-high 16 points.
The third quarter would be the difference in the game, as Pike came out determined to use their size and athleticism to their advantage. The Red Devils hammered Pendleton Heights, who was playing without starting forward
Dameion Warrum, on the glass to the tune of 42-14, which included 19 offensive rebounds. Pike was able to score 19 points off those 19 offensive rebound attempts.
Pike moves to 8-7 on the season and will face off against Decatur Central
next Thursday as part of a three-game event at
Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Pendleton Heights drops to 8-8 and has a conference game
next Thursday against Yorktown.
