Mt. Vernon used lights out shooting to take down 2A #1 Frankton Thursday night.
Frankton scored on a Kayden Key cut to start the game. That was a sign of things to come as both teams clicked on the offensive end. The pace was quick with each team scoring at an incredible rate early. Landon Weins provided the scoring punch in the first quarter with 12 points. Damari Gatewood and Mt. Vernon matched each blow, though. Frankton led 26-22 after eight minutes of play.
It looked like the game might swing to Mt. Vernon's advantage after Weins picked up back to back fouls in a matter of seconds early in the second quarter. It gave him three fouls and sent him to the bench for the next seven minutes of the half. But The Frankton's offense kept rolling without Weins.
After Frankton held a 45-41 halftime lead, Mt. Vernon dominated the third quarter. Keith Rupert had a monster second half for the Marauders. He recorded 16 of his 22 points in the second half. Behind Rupert's shooting and Peyton Meadors' rebounding/scoring in the lane, Mt. Vernon opened the third quarter on a 24-3 run.
Even with Frankton opening a 17-point lead, Frankton wasn't done. Kayden Key kept attacking. The junior guard tallied 29 points on 10-16 shooting. Frankton made it a two-possession game with three minutes left, but Mt. Vernon's shooting never cooled off. The Marauders went 12-23 from deep including Rupert's 4-6.
Mt. Vernon won going away, 84-67.
