In front of a sold out Hive on Saturday night, Morristown welcomed in County rival Shelbyville for their first meeting since the 96-97 season. The Golden Bears were able to withstand a huge night from Marian signee Hayden Langkabel to end their three-game losing streak and hand Morristown just their second loss of the season.
Shelbyville got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 9-2 lead early on, but foul trouble would soon come into play for the Bears. Zach Kuhn, Brock Blackwell, and Sam Lewis would all pick up two fouls in the first quarter. Coach Ryan Mack would have to switch to a zone defense to control the foul issues, but that only worked to a point, as Sam Lewis and twin brother Cooper would both collect their third fouls in the second period. Thankfully, Shelbyville managed to score enough on offense to keep the Yellow Jackets at a safe distance heading into halftime.
The second half turned into the Hayden Langkabel show, as the senior guard scored 10 of Morristown’s 12 third-quarter points and 23 of their 34 points in the second half. Langkabel went 13 of 14 shooting from two-point territory as he used a variety of dribbles moves, spins, and creative finishes at the rim to dissect the Shelbyville defense.
Junior guard Josh Williams scored 10 of his team-high 16 points for Shelbyville in the second half and also added four steals to help end promising Morristown possessions. Luke Reed came off the bench to add 9 points for the Bears. Eli Streeval added 19 points for Morristown, as he and Langkabel combined for 56 of Morristown’s 66 points.
