Morristown (27-2) and Southwood (25-3) filled Bankers Life Fieldhouse early Saturday. The Class A state finals turned out to be a one-sided contest.
Senior Peyton Trexler scored the first five points of the game for Southwood as he was able to get points in transition then driving to the hoop with little resistance. That ended up being one of the few positives for Southwood in the game.
The overall pace was fantastic to begin the game as each team pushed the ball and defenses weren’t ready to stop the ball. Amazingly, the pace only increased in the second half.
Morristown’s Eli Streeval knocked home two triples in the first six minutes against Southwood’s zone. He scored 10 points in the first quarter to lead Morristown to the 21-17 lead after one quarter. Streeval then scored on back to back lobs to start the second period. That helped push Morristown to a 10-point lead with 4:57 left in the first half. Streeval continued to play at a high level throughout the game. He finished with 35 points to lead all scorers.
Hayden Langkabel went 0-5 from the field in the opening quarter, but three of those misses were on one possession where he missed his own putback twice. He was able to contribute as a passer. He collected three assists in the first half. He got better as the game developed, but his teammates carried the offensive load.
Logan Laster picked up the slack for Langkabel. He was incredible in transition for Morristown. The junior guard protected the ball against Southwood’s pressure. Through three quarters, Laster had 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists while only having two turnovers. He controlled the game while setting up Streeval and others for easy baskets. He finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. That’s the first triple-double in Class A championship game history.
Behind Laster, Streeval and Langkabel, Morristown rolled to the 89-60 victory. The 89 points was a record for the Class A finals.
Carson Blair carried over his shooting struggles from the Blackhawk Christian game. He was 3-12 from the field in the first half including 1-7 from three-point range. Even his made shots were tough. Blair finished 3-20 for seven points. Blair’s night was a reflection on how things went for Southwood overall, especially in the second half. Peyton Trexler was the bright spot for Southwood with 18 points, seven assists and four rebounds.
