In a matchup of top five 4A teams, Carmel got a double-double from senior John Michael Mulloy and an impressive debut from freshman Pete Suder to hang on against #3 Zionsville by a 66-61 score. Bethel commitment Nathan Childress led Zionsville with 23 points in the loss, and Purdue signee Isaiah Thompson shook off a rough shooting night to finish with 16 points and five assists.
Carmel was the beneficiary of a 20-2 margin in bench scoring thanks to 18 combined points from guards Karsten Windlan and Robert Fry. The boost was needed as starting point guard Luke Heady was saddled with foul trouble throughout the second half.
The Greyhounds gained control of the game in the second quarter after recovering from an early 9-5 hole. Using seniors Andrew Owens and John Michael Mulloy in the high post, Carmel was able to find gaps in Zionsville’s 2-3 zone defense to get shots in the paint, which would lead to a ten point halftime advantage.
Zionsville would close a deficit that grew to as much as 12 down to four with just over a minute remaining on a Brandon Vernon triple. Carmel would struggle to close out the game at the line, going just 1-9 down the stretch. Nate Childress and Isaiah Thompson combined for 18 of the Eagles’ 23 fourth quarter points, but the comeback attempt would fall just short.
