A 13-2 second quarter pushed Chesterton to a season-opening win over Gary 21st Century, 60-50.
After a back and forth first quarter, Chesterton took advantage of Johnell Davis’ foul trouble. The Gary 21st Century offense stalled without its star. Jack Eaton and freshman Travis Grayson led the charge for the Trojan. Those two gave Chesterton strong backcourt play with junior Tyler Nelson out with a sprained ankle.
Chesterton put the game out of reach in the third quarter. They did a good job of moving the ball for easy looks against the 21st defense. Jake Wadding’s powerful two-handed dunk was the exclamation mark to the Trojan victory. He tallied 15 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Gary 21st Century struggled with turnovers, but the Cougars started to get better opportunities late in the game. Johnell Davis and Triyonta Lomax got the offense rolling late. A good chunk of Davis’ 21 points came in the fourth quarter in a last-ditch effort.
Chesterton’s 24-point fourth quarter lead was cut in half with a minute to play. Alex Schmidt and Grayson made enough plays late for Chesterton to survive the run.
