Floyd Central traveled to Indianapolis Saturday and stunned Lawrence North, 58-56.

After falling behind 6-2, Floyd Central scored 10 straight points and in doing so, showed they could compete. Like most of the game, Indiana State signee Cobie Barnes and sophomore Jake Heidbreder did most of the damage. The pair scored all 10 Highlander points in the run.

Heidbreder put his name on the map with his performance. The sophomore was dazzling as he scored off the dribble, made smart reads as he drove to the basket, and buried three-pointers. He was a junior varsity player last since Floyd Central was loaded with senior backcourt players. Heidbreder displayed tremendous potential while producing at a high level on Saturday.

Lawrence North’s Tony Perkins matched Heidbreder stride for stride in the first half. Perkins asserted himself on both ends on his way to 18 points in the half. When he turns his aggressiveness all the way up, there are few players better in the 2020 class.

It was a tight game until Lawrence North opened a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. Barnes scored eight of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to give Floyd Central the boost it needed to erase the deficit and take the lead late.

The Highlanders scored eight straight points to hold a two-point advantage with 1:07 left in the game. That’s when Floyd Central’s defense clamped down on Lawrence North. The Wildcats couldn’t get any space as the clock ticked down. Finally, Perkins had to throw up an off-balanced shot as the time expired and it was nowhere close.

Floyd Central moved to 2-0 while Lawrence North started 0-1.
