The annual FORUM Tipoff Classis is Saturday at Southport High School. Here is the schedule, best players, and match-ups plus ticket information.
Noon, Frankton vs. Southport
The day is kicked off with Frankton taking on the host school. Frankton will be a contender in 2A once again although they have lost to Lapel and Tipton already. Senior guard Kayden Key is a proven scorer and leader. He’s averaging nearly 25 points per game through the first four outings. He is the backbone of Frankton. He’s already a 1,000 career point scorer. Rylan Detling, Brayton Cain, Andrew Hartly, Ethan Bates, and Jon Hatzell provide a strong, balanced supporting cast. Southport is rebuilding behind junior guard Brevin Jefferson and senior post Chaz Hinds. Jefferson is a talented guard that can do a bit of everything. It looks like his game is turning a corner as an upperclassman. Hinds is committed to the University of Pikeville in Kentucky. He’s a post scorer that can step out for a three-pointer as well. Matt Munoz is a player to watch as well. He has the size and skill to play inside and outside. Frankton will have to stop Jefferson and Hinds to win the game.
1:40 pm, Carmel vs. Jeffersonville
This features Indiana Basketball Source’s #4 team (Carmel) against the #8 team (Jeffersonville) in 4A. Carmel is loaded once against with Butler signee John Michael Mulloy, Findlay-bound wing Andrew Owens, guards Luke Heady and Karsten Windlan, along with freshmen star Pete Sudor. This is a classic Carmel team that defends, hits shots, and moves the ball. The Greyhounds won’t beat themselves, but Jeffersonville has the talent to take the game from them. Tre Coleman is a power player that has expanded his skill set. Coleman is a great defender and rebounder while being able to be a playmaker on the offensive end. Carmel’s zone defense could limit Coleman’s effectiveness, though. Jacob Jones is another playmaker for Jeff. He’s a quick guard that knows how to draw to defenders then kick to open teammates. Jones has also developed into a threat from the three-point line. Jeffersonville has its own freshman star in Will Lovings-Watts. He’s a 6’3” wing with fantastic athleticism and a well-rounded skill set. Lovings-Watts needs to be on the glass to offset Carmel’s size advantage for Jeffersonville to win tis game.
3:20 pm New Castle vs. Brownsburg
Brownsburg is a well-tested team that is ranked #12 in Indiana Basketball Source’s 4A ratings. Sophomore Pierce Thomas is performing at a consistent level. Thomas is an elite athlete that wows the crowd each time he steps on the court. Senior guard Cameron Alford scored 30 against La Lumiere last week. He’s one of the top guards remaining in the 2019 class. Junior forward Malek Edmonds is emerging has a D1 prospect now that he is fully healthy. Edmonds is a power forward that comes off pin down screens for three-pointers. New Castle has been without Purdue signee Mason Gillis as he rehabs his knee. The Trojans still have Ball State signee Luke Bumbalough. He is having a huge senior season as he tries to lead New Castle. Bumbalough is averaging 30 points and eight rebounds per game through the first three contests. He’s shooting 12 three-pointers and 14 free throws per game. That’s a hard combination to achieve. New Castle is getting 13 points per game from senior Nick Grieser and 10 from Mason Hardwick. Those three will have to be great for New Castle to beat Brownsburg.
5:00 pm Culver Academies vs. Hamilton Southeastern
Culver Academies has its first tough weekend of the year. Friday, it faces Brebeuf then HSE on Saturday. Culver has most of its 2018 3A state title team back led by Trey Galloway and Ethan Brittain-Watts. Both are off to excellent starts. Galloway has multiple Big Ten offers, while Brittain-Watts is signed with Boston University. Deontae Craig brings toughness, rebounding, and paint scoring. Craig is a major football prospect. Jordon Freeman had 17 points in the season-opener as well. Culver Academies currently ranks as the top 3A team in the Indiana Basketball Source rankings. HSE is led by Toledo signee Aaron Etherington and Indiana Wesleyan-bound Noah Smith. Etherington and Smith have powered HSE for the last couple of seasons. Smith is a slashing guard that rebounds and defends at a high level. Etherington is a great vertical athlete that is a very good spot-up shooter as well. The supporting cast is key for HSE. Mabor Majak controls the paint on both ends. The Royals need Majak to find a handful of baskets through offensive rebounds and running the floor. Kole Hornbuckle is an excellent shooter that helps stretch the opposing defense. Junior wing Chris Grubbs has taken his athleticism to a new level this season. He’s doing a great job of creating off the dribble then using his height and athleticism to finish in the lane. Sophomore Landon Morris is giving HSE a boost off the bench with eight points and four rebounds per game. This should be a great match-up.
6:40 pm Zionsville vs. Cathedral
This is an Indiana vs. Purdue match-up as Purdue signee Isaiah Thompson takes on Indiana signee Armaan Franklin. Thompson is off to a good start as he’s averaging 23.5 points through the first two games. He is getting help from Bethel-bound forward Nathan Childress. He’s averaging 17 points per game. Anthony Scales is cleaning up everything with 10 rebounds per game plus eight points. Move-in Brandon Vernon is scoring 8.5 points, while DePauw-bound center Hogan Orbaugh is getting five points. Armaan Franklin is averaging 18.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in the first three games. His scoring hasn’t been as efficient as normal, but Franklin impacts the game in all areas. James Franklin, Justin Hensley, and freshman Tayshawn Comer are also in double figures for Cathedral. Isaac Farah has given the Irish good minutes off the bench as well. This will be another competitive game with bragging rights between Thompson and Franklin on the line.
8:30 La Lumiere vs. Center Grove
The headline game is Indiana University signee Trayce Jackson-Davis against La Lumiere’s Isaiah Stewart. That’s a match-up of top 20 prospects, and they should be going head to head most of the game. Stewart is an athletic 6’8” power forward that rebounds and scores at a high level. TJD will be up for the challenge. Jackson-Davis is posting Mr. Basketball numbers early in the season, and this match-up can making a lasting impression on voters. With Jackson-Davis signed to Indiana, he is trying to get La Lumiere wing Keion Brooks Jr. to join him. Brooks and Jackson-Davis were teammates with the Indy Heat over the spring and summer and fed off each other way. They also took an official visit to UCLA together. Oh, by the way, there are many other players in this game. La Lumiere has Gerald Drumgoole, Paxson Wojcik (Loyola signee), Jakov Kukic (UC-Santa Barbara), Wendell Green, and freshman Kamari Lands. That group has size, athleticism, and skill. Center Grove has Indiana Wesleyan-bound guard Spencer Piercefield, Indianapolis-bound Ben Nicoson, freshman Tayven Jackson, 2020 forward Justin DeGraaf, and senior guard Ben Greller. Center Grove will need big games from that group. All will need to help TJD rebound, and if they get hot from the outside, Center Grove has a good chance to pull the upside.
