The annual FORUM Tipoff Classic was held Saturday at Southport High School. Below are the game recaps. (Pictured: Brownsburg's Cameron Alford)
La Lumiere 62, Center Grove (4-2) 48.
The headline game featured La Lumiere with Keion Brooks and Isaiah Stewart against Trayce Jackson-Davis and Center Grove, and a night after getting blown out of the water by Pike, Center Grove held its own.
Spencer Pierce connected on a three-pointer on Center Grove’s first possession. It might have been a bit of a relief after getting down 25-2 to Pike Friday night. Center Grove played with focus and poise against the size, length, and athleticism of La Lumiere.
After a low-possession first quarter, Keion Brooks Jr. wowed the crowd on a few of his scoring plays in the second quarter. Other than huge transition dunks, Brooks’ main scoring weapon throughout high school has been his mid-range shooting. With his size, Brooks can shoot over defenders comfortably and accurately. He did that against Center Grove.
Although Trayce Jackson-Davis scored eight points in the first half, he scored from the field better in the second half. He had a couple left-handed, monster dunks in short succession in the third quarter. He was in a tough position because Isaiah Stewart and Jakov Kukic were matching-up with him then Keion Brooks was coming from the weak side to help. That limited Jackson-Davis’ effectiveness in the paint.
With Archie Miller, John Calipari, and Tom Izzo watching, Isaiah Stewart got better as the game went on. He came off the bench since he missed some recent games due to injury. He ended up dominating the offensive glass. Stewart is so strong, athletic, and aggressive that he is impossible to stop around the basket. It was Stewart who kept Center Grove at an arm’s length in the fourth quarter as he finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Center Grove played focused and tough throughout the game but didn’t have the weapons to compete with La Lumiere. Piercefield made plays late to finish with 12 points. La Lumiere outscored Center Grove by 11 in the fourth to win 62-48.
IU recruiting target Keion Brooks finished with 22 points and nine rebounds. Isaiah Stewart had 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Indiana University signee Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with 18 points. Spencer Piercefield added 12 points and five rebounds.
Cathedral (3-2) 81, Zionsville (1-2) 74
Shooting was on display in the match-up between Indiana signee Armaan Franklin and Purdue signee Isaiah Thompson. Both players finished with 27 points, but Franklin had the last laugh by getting the win.
Armaan Franklin hit three three-pointers in the opening quarter to get Cathedral off to a good start, but Zionsville matched him step for step. Brandon Vernon and Nathan Childress found success from deep to help Zionsville take a three-point lead to the second quarter.
The pace slowed a bit in the second period as Isaiah Thompson lived at the free throw. He made 9-11 free throws in the first half. Thompson didn’t find his shooting rhythm until late in the first half, but the free throws helped him be ultra-productive.
The second half was back and forth affair. For the game, there were 16 lead changes and 11 ties. It was a fantastic game to watch with high-level shooting, athleticism, and playmaking.
Cathedral senior James Franklin stepped up in the second half. He hit a couple big three-pointers and had his hand in many key baskets. Franklin finished with 18 points.
With Thompson feeling from the outside and getting to the paint, Cathedral relied on Armaan Franklin to match Thompson. The two stars met and exceed expectations. Franklin used his athleticism more than his shooting in the second half. Thompson initiated each scoring opportunity for Zionsville.
Zionsville held a five-point lead with 5:21 left, that’s when Justin Hensley changed the game. Hensley was having a good game but took it to a new tier late. He hit a three then after an Armaan Franklin three-point player, Hensley added another three to put Cathedral ahead. Moments later, Hensley created a steal and got the ball to Franklin for a dunk.
Zionsville was never able to recover from the Hensley run.
Cathedral won 81-74.
Armaan Franklin had 27 points and 12 rebounds by going 5-8 from three-point range. Justin Hensley added 20 on 6-9 from deep. James Franklin scored 18. Tayshawn Comer tallied 11 points and six assists.
Isaiah Thompson finished with 27 points including 11-13 free throws. Nathan Childress had 18 points. Brandon Vernon scored 11, while Anthony Scales had eight.
Hamilton Southeastern (6-0) 66, Culver Academics (3-1) 55
Mabor Majak scored six points in the first quarter to get the Hamilton Southeastern offense rolling. The lefty center used his size advantage to perfection as he scored on his first three field goal attempts. Majak helped Hamilton Southeastern establish an eight-point lead heading to the second quarter.
Culver Academies junior Deontae Craig used his strength to rebound and score in the paint. His nifty post moves helped CMA get back into the game, but HSE sophomore Landon Morris gave the Royals a lift off the bench. His activity around the basket led to eight points in the first half.
HSE started the second half with a couple Aaron Etherington free throws before Culver rattled off eight straight points to tie the game. Nick Hittle hit a three-pointer during the run, which might have been the biggest surprise of the game. Hittle knocked down three three-pointers in seven attempts. He has been a power post player with the occasional mid-range jumper before this.
The Royals bounced back well as Etherington and Chris Grubbs helped build a five-point lead. Hamilton Southeastern maintained the lead as Culver was unable to string together made shots. Trey Galloway and Ethan Brittain-Watts scored a combined 22 points on 8-27 shooting. Culver isn’t going to win many games with their main duo scoring like that.
It looked like Culver Academies could have one last run after Deontae Craig scored to make it 58-53 in HSE’s favor. But Grubbs and Etherington were there again to put the game out of reach. HSE won going away 66-55.
Aaron Etherington led all scorers with 18 points. He also had six rebounds. Chris Grubbs finished with 14. Mabor Majak added 11, and Landon Morris recorded eight.
Culver Academies was led by Nick Hittle’s 17 points. Deontae Craig tallied 16 points and six rebounds. Ethan Brittain-Watts scored 13, while Trey Galloway had nine.
Brownsburg (3-3) 73, New Castle (2-3) 41.
Brownsburg grabbed control of the game by jumping out to a 16-2 lead behind the playmaking of senior guard Cameron Alford and shooting of Jakobie McGowan. Alford racked up four assists in the first quarter as he got all his teammates involved.
Ball State signee Luke Bumbalough asserted himself late in the first quarter. He scored five straight points to kick start the New Castle offense. Bumbalough scored 11 of New Castle’s 19 points in the first half.
It was never a game in the second half as Brownsburg blew out New Castle. Brownsburg held New Castle to an eFG% of 37.5% for the game.
Jakobie McGowan made a living in the left corner as he hit five three-pointers in the same spot. He finished with 19 points. Malek Edmonds had a good showing with 15 points. Cameron Alford controlled all aspects of the game and finished with 12 points, eight assists, and three steals. Reis Thomas scored 12 and Pierce Thomas tallied nine.
Luke Bumbalough finished with a game-high 23 points but shot just 7-18 from the field. Nick Grieser and Blake Burris each scored seven points.
Carmel (5-0) 61, Jeffersonville (3-1) 41.
Carmel established Butler University signee John Michael Mulloy in the post early as Jeffersonville didn’t have the size to bother Mulloy. He was scoring with ease and getting Jeffersonville in foul trouble on the way. Mulloy enabled Carmel to build an early lead.
Turnovers were a major detriment to Jeffersonville’s offense all game but especially early. Carmel’s defense didn’t allow the Red Devils into the lane and that hurt their production tremendously.
Senior guard Karsten Windlan’s scoring enabled Carmel to expand its lead quickly. Windlan scored 10 points in the first half to break the game open. When he is scoring efficiently like he did Saturday, Carmel is tough to beat. Windlan finished with 20 points on 9-11 shooting from the field.
Jeffersonville's Tre Coleman was never able to find space against Carmel’s defense. The junior wing was a bright spot for Jeff as he scored 11 points, dish four assists, and grabbed four rebounds. It wasn’t enough to keep the Red Devils in the game, though.
Carmel extended its halftime lead of 15 immediately to begin the second half, and it got worse for Jeffersonville from there. The Grey Hound lead reached 25 before ending at 61-41.
Windlan led Carmel with 20 points and six rebounds. John Michael Mulloy had 19 points and seven rebounds. Andrew Owens went 3-3 for seven points.
Jacob Jones added 10 points and eight rebounds for Jeff but committed four turnovers. Darin Starks added eight points as well.
Final in overtime: Frankton (4-2) 49, Southport (2-3) 47.
Brayton Cain helped lead a fourth-quarter comeback for Frankton. The Eagles were trailing by seven points with 2:48 remaining before Cain hit one three-pointer. Moments later, Cain connected on a triple to tie the game. The senior guard also created a steal to give Frankton a chance to win the game in regulation. Chaz Hinds turned the tables with a steal on the inbound with 5.4 seconds left. He passed to a streaking Brian Miller, but the attempt came up empty to force overtime.
Hinds had a big game for Southport. The University of Pikeville recruit tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. He was the key to Southport’s offense against the Frankton zone. Behind the play of Hinds, Southport was able to build the seven-point fourth quarter lead.
After a slow start that saw the teams combine for 16 turnovers in the first half, Kayden Key and Rylan Detling handled most of the scoring for Frankton. The senior duo scored 15 of 16 points for Frankton in the first half.
The game was decided after Frankton worked for the last shot of overtime and was fouled on a drive. Jon Hatzell made both free throws to give Frankton the advantage with 1.3 seconds left. After a pass to mid-court for a quick timeout, Brevin Jefferson was able to get a good look for a game-winning three-pointer but it was off the mark.
Kayden Key led Frankton with 16 points. Detling fouled out but recorded 13 points and seven rebounds. Cain finished with 10 points, four assists, and three steals.
Matt Munoz added 11 for Southport. Brevin Jefferson finished with eight points and four rebounds.
