Powered by three-point shooting, Chatard used a massive fourth quarter to defeat Oldenburg Academy in Indianapolis Friday night.

Oldenburg junior Jacob Johnson has been great this season, and he wasted no time putting up points Friday. Johnson entered the game averaging 21.6 points per game, and he scored nine of Oldenburg’s 11 first quarter points.

After Oldenburg controlled the game early, the tide turned late in the first quarter. In the final seven seconds, Chatard senior Cooper Lewis buried a three-pointer then Timmy McNeilis stole the inbounds pass and scored. Lewis scored seven of Chatard’s 10 points in the second quarter, and the Trojans took a 23-20 lead to the halftime break.

Johnson was held scoreless in the second period before exploding in the third. He scored 10 points in the first five minutes of the stanza on his way to a 16-point quarter. It was impressive as he hit shots from deep, scored going to the basket, and drew fouls.

Behind Johnson’s antics, Oldenburg Academy held a 39-33 lead going to the fourth. The lead was expanded to 41-33 before Chatard made its run. Junior Edreece Redmond had his hand in nearly every play of the comeback. He pressured Oldenburg into turnovers, found open teammates for three-pointers against the zone, and scored as well.

Although Chatard only scored 33 points in the first three quarters, the Trojans poured in 26 points in the fourth. Sam Richey, Andre Long, Charleston Bowles, and Redmond hit triples for Chatard in the fourth quarter. Richey connected on three three-pointers to finish with 14 points. Chatard went from down eight to up nine points in the span six minutes.

Facing dire circumstances, Oldenburg didn’t fold. The Twisters were down nine points with under a minute to go until Andrew Oesterling connected on a three. After two free throws from Redmond, Johnson hit a long-range bomb as well.  Then Oesterling hit another after Lewis split a pair of free throws.

The Oesterling three went through with 13 seconds left, but Oldenburg was out of timeouts, so the clock ran. Chatard took its time getting to the ball then held onto the ball out of bounds until Eli Sporleder nearly picked off the pass. The ball went out of bounds before he could control it. Now up three, Chatard was able to inbound the ball to Redmond and the clock melted down to 0.4 before Oldenburg could foul. He split the free throws as Chatard won 59-55.

Cooper Lewis recorded 17 points on 5-10 shooting from three-point range. He also had five rebounds and three steals. Redmond was huge with 13 points, five assists, five steals, and four rebounds. Charleston Bowles had seven points. Brennan Beausir added three points and four rebounds. Andre Long and Timmy McNeilis had three and two points, respectively.

Oldenburg’s Jacob Johnson had game-high honors with 33 points and 10 rebounds. He was 10-17 from the field and 4-6 from the three-point line. Andrew Oesterling finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Zach Wegman had three points and four rebounds. Eli Sporleder had three points, and Dempsy Bohman scored two.

Chatard moved to 3-1 with the win. Oldenburg is now 4-2 on the season.
