The annual Manual Extravaganza had everything – great games, big-time players, and a comeback for the ages.
Lawrence North 85, Hamilton Heights (Tenn.) 80.
This was one of the biggest and best comebacks I’ve ever seen.
Early it looked like Lawrence North was going to get run out of the gym. Junior guard Jordan Rawls connected on his first seven three-pointers of the game. Jack Keefer got a technical, and the Wildcats were down 24 in a blink of an eye.
The game swung in an entirely different direction in the third quarter. Lawrence North started flying around on the defensive end. The Wildcats played with more confidence on both ends of the court. Lawrence North scored the first 20 points of the second half. Yes, 20 points. Hamilton Heights only scored on a pair of Rawls free throws with 0.6 seconds left in the period.
After Indiana State signee Jared Hankins carried the offense in the first half, Shamar Avance, David Perkins, and Vincent Brady contributed in a major way in the second half. All had big plays throughout the comeback.
Tony Perkins was strong from start to finish. He plays with a toughness that isn’t common in high school players. He was always attacking the incredible size of Hamilton Heights. He finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Jordan Rawls scored 29 points on 8-9 shooting from three-point distance in the first half. That led to Hamilton Heights’ 51-32 lead at the break. He was held to nine points in the second half.
Ben Davis 80, Muncie Central 65.
In a game that wasn’t expected to be close, Muncie Central gave a valiant effort before Ben Davis took over late. It was another insane game from Dawand Jones as he went 11-12 from the field for 24 points and 12 rebounds. After missing his first couple shots, Georgia State-bound guard Jalen Windham was just as ridiculous. Windham tallied 27 points on 10-14 shooting.
Muncie Central junior Victor Young continues to progress as a wing. He scored 24 points on dunks, mid-range shots, three-pointers, and putbacks. He has a well-rounded game, and he’s willing to do anything that is needed.
Cathedral 78, Castle 54.
It was never much of a game as Cathedral jumped out to an early lead and rolled. The duel between Indiana University signee Armaan Franklin and Clemson signee Alex Hemenway was fun. Franklin broke loose for a handful of dunks in the first half to separate the Irish from the Knights. Franklin finished with 32 points on 14-21 shooting. Hemenway scored 25 for Castle.
Franklin had plenty of help as Justin Hensley drilled three after three, and Haven Montefalco scored around the basket. Freshman Tayshawn Comer also had a good game for Cathedral.
Zionsville 64, Valparaiso 54.
In a match-up of Purdue signees, other players decided the game. Isaiah Thompson and Brandon Newman each had their struggles Saturday. Thompson was 2-8 from three-point range and 5-13 overall on his way to 13 points. Newman was also 2-8 from three-point distance and 7-21 overall. He finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Bethel-bound forward Nathan Childress stepped up for Zionsville. He recorded 20 points on 8-10 shooting from the field.
Although it was close throughout, Valparaiso was never able to make enough shots to win the game.
North Central 59, Fort Wayne Wayne 57, in overtime.
Freshman Leland Walker turned heads early, and junior Charlie Peterson helped seal the victory late. Peterson was a force on the offensive glass as he recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds. Walker finished with 15 points, and Thearn Johnson added 13 for North Central.
Michael Redding slashed his way to 16 points in the loss.
Warren Central 62, East St. Louis 52.
Isiah Moore hit shots early. Isiah Moore hit shots late. In the end, the Warriors extended its winning streak to 37 games. Moore hit his first four three-pointers of the game to give Warren Central an early advantage.
East St. Louis has a similar make-up as Warren Central and neither team gave an inch. Senior Jesse Bingham was attacking from start to finish for Warren Central. He took the ball to the basket off the dribble and challenged every shot in the paint. His aggressiveness set the tone for Warren Central.
Terrance Hargrove displayed an all-around game for ESL as he tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. He is a tremendous athlete that has a smooth shooting stroke. Jakobie Robinson and Bingham did a good job of limiting his scoring opportunities. Robinson finished with eight points and nine rebounds for Warren.
Isiah Moore had a game-high 28 points as he lit it up from the outside.
Indianapolis Manual 74, Blackhawk Christian 60.
Manual senior forward Jalen Johnson feasted inside for 28 points and 11 rebounds. Blackhawk was without sophomore Caleb Furst as he recovers from surgery on his finger. UIndy signee Frankie Davidson helped Blackhawk stay in it, but Manual had too much with Johnson, Caleb Redman, and Wilante Hankston. Redman gave Manual a boost in the second quarter on his way to 16 points. Hankston scored 17 for Manual. Frankie Davidson and Zane Burke each had 20 points for Blackhawk.
Indianapolis Howe 68, Andrean 61.
In a battle of top 2A teams, Howe senior Kycia Washington had a great all-around game. It was the best I’ve seen him play in terms of scoring while making the right decisions with the ball. He scored 23 points in the win. Kyle Ross was the consistent offensive threat for Andrean. He hit a couple three-pointers early in the game then used his size to score with ease in the paint late. Ross finished with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Darryl Boone made a couple big plays late for Howe. He had a putback for a three-point play then a steal that led to game-sealing free throws.
Creshaun Brown had a good second half on his way to 15 points. Jalen Stamps added 11 for Howe.
Hammond 58, Indianapolis Tindley 44
Hammond used 18 points from senior guard Amiri Young to hold off a late rally by Tindley. Young used his speed and strength to get to the lane and score. Sophomore Christian DaCosta had a strong second half for Tindley to make it a game. He finished with 12 points.
