North Judson senior Chuck Wilcox scored a school-record 53 points for the Bluejays and New Castle senior Luke Bumbalough poured in 51 points to become the sixth Trojans’ player to surpass 50 in a game.
Floyd Central senior Cobie Barnes, Hammond Noll sophomore Courtney Blakely, Jay County senior Shelby Caldwell and Gibson Southern junior Meredith Raley join that duo as recipients for the week of Dec. 17-22 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Wilcox and Blakely are respective boys and girls winners for District 1. Bumbalough and Caldwell received accolades for District 2. Barnes and Raley are honorees for District 3.
The 6-0 Wilcox poured in 53 points with five rebounds, two assists, seven steals and one block as the North Judson boys defeated Oregon-Davis 91-37 in their only game of the week. Wilcox sank 19-of-28 field goals, 4-of-10 3-pointers and 11-of-16 free throws as the Bluejays improved to 2-4. Wilcox’s outburst eclipsed the previous school record of 52 points set by Kirk Manns against Valparaiso on Feb. 22, 1985.
Bumbalough scored 39 of his game-high 51 points in the second half, but it was not enough as the New Castle boys dropped a 75-69 decision to Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in their only game of the week. The 6-0 guard added one rebound and two assists while converting 15-of-22 shots, 9-of-13 from distance and 12-of-16 free throws as the Trojans fell to 3-5.
The Ball State signee joins a prestigious list of former New Castle players with 50-plus games – 76 points by Lee Pence against Noblesville on Feb. 1, 1918; 57 points by Steve Alford against Broad Ripple on March 19, 1983; 55 points by Kent Benson against Muncie Burris on Dec. 9, 1972; 52 points by John Lee against Lewisville on Feb. 24, 1960; and 51 points by Ray Pavy against Kokomo on Feb. 20, 1959.
The 6-6 Barnes scored 31 points with eight rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots to lead the Floyd Central boys to a 53-48 triumph over Roncalli in their only game of the week. The Indiana State recruit was 12-of-18 from the field, 1-of-2 on 3-pointers and 6-of-8 on free throws as the Highlanders improved to 7-1.
Blakely averaged 26.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.5 steals in helping the Hammond Noll girls remain undefeated at 10-0. The 5-7 guard provided 30 points, three rebounds, six assist and 10 steals in a 73-43 victory over Wheeler. She followed with 22 points, two rebounds, 10 assists and three steals in a 69-54 decision over Cleveland (Ohio) John Hay in the Hoosier-Buckeye Shootout. Over both games, Blakely hit 20-of-38 shots, 5-of-13 3-pointers and 7-of-8 free throws.
The 5-11 Caldwell scored a school-record 41 points as the Jay County girls defeated Blackford 77-17 in their only game of the week. Caldwell added six rebounds, two assists and four steals as the Jays improved to 7-6. She converted 16-of-25 from the floor, 7-of-13 from long range and 2-of-4 free throws. She broke the previous school record of 40 points that was shared by Shannon Freeman in 1985-86 and Lyla Muhlenkamp against Blackford on Dec. 15, 2015.
Raley averaged 21.3 points, including a school-record 38 points in one game, and 10.3 rebounds in keying the Gibson Southern girls to the championship of the Gibson County Toyota Classic. The 6-0 forward opened with 38 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 77-34 victory over Mt. Carmel, Ill. She followed with 17 points, 10 rebounds and one assist in a 69-56 triumph over Princeton. Raley tallied nine points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Titans (11-3) beat Wood Memorial 67-38 for the tournament title.
For the three games, Raley was 26-of-37 on field goals, 3-of-4 on 3-pointers and 9-of-13 on free throws. Those figures include 16-of-20, 1-of-2 and 5-of-8 in the 38-point game where Raley eclipsed the previous school best of 36 points set by her sister, Maddie Raley, in a game in 2013.
