Chesterton vs Lawrence Central
Chesterton jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Bearcats, but that lead didn’t last long. Nijel Pack hit a three to get Lawrence Central on the board. The next possession Nebraska commitment D’Andre Davis connected from deep. Then Pack buried another. It happened in the blink of an eye.
The only thing that slowed Pack was two fouls. He went to the bench, but Davis kept pouring in buckets. He scored 10 points in the first period as Lawrence Central built a 22-10 lead.
With Chesterton in a hole, freshman Travis Grayson was a bright spot. The ultra-quick point guard was able to get to the lane and finish. He scored eight points in the first half off the bench. Grayson’s quickness is going to give him a chance to be a great player.
Davis kept scoring with ease in the third quarter. He recorded eight points in the period to push Lawrence Central’s lead to 24 points.
LC let off the gas in the fourth quarter to win 66-41.
D’Andre Davis led all scorers with 22 points. He also had eight rebounds. Nijel Pack added 19 points on 5-8 shooting from three-point range. Jacob LaRavia recorded 11 points and eight rebounds. Xavier DelReal had six points and seven rebounds.
Jake Wadding had 14 points for Chesterton. Travis Grayson was 3-5 from the field for eight points. Nick Mullen added seven, and Drew Vanderwoude had six.
New Albany vs. Crown Point
Both teams started slowly, but Julien Hunter gave the New Albany energy with his paint scoring and rebounding in the first quarter. Crown Point struggled to maintain possession as they committed multiple turnovers and offensive fouls.
Senior guard Elias Gerodemos was the only Crown Point player able to score with consistency in the first half. He had nine points as he attacked off the dribble. Sam Snodgrass added four points on 1-6 from the field in the first 16 minutes of play.
With Hunter and Trey Hourigan with two fouls, sophomore Jordan Thomas gave New Albany great minutes in the second quarter. He recorded six points, five rebounds and two blocks in six minutes of action. Thomas didn’t play against Pike when Indiana Basketball Source saw New Albany last week. So his production wasn’t expected.
New Albany held a 32-20 lead at the break.
Crown Point came out of the locker room with a renewed focus. Snodgrass played with extreme effort in the second half – flying around defensively, crashing the glass, slashing to the basket off the dribble. His play seemed to give Crown Point energy after a flat first half. Behind Snodgrass, the Bulldogs cut New Albany’s lead down to four points.
New Albany responded with a 10-0 run behind Julien Hunter, Derrick Stevenson and a three-pointer by Kaden Stanton. After the run, New Albany led by 14 going to the final quarter.
Crown Point found a spark in unlikely sources like Ty Smith, Matt Hanlon, and Sam Decker. Those three made it a five-point game then Snodgrass hit a shot to make it 54-51 with three minutes to play. With the game in the balance, Julien Hunter, Landon Sprigler, and Chris Johnson made the plays to win it for New Albany.
Elias Gerodemos added a layup at the buzzer to make the final 61-59 in New Albany’s favor.
Derrick Stevenson scored 17 points to lead New Albany. Julien Hunter complied 16 points and 11 rebounds. Landon Sprigler added 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Gerodemos led all scorers with 22 points. Sam Snodgrass had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ty Smith added seven, and Sam Decker scored six points
Noblesville vs. Northridge
Noblesville weathered a shooting storm from Northridge’s Jackson Erekson to beat the Raiders in overtime.
Erekson buried three triples in the first quarter for Northridge, but he was just warming up. The senior guard scored all 15 Northridge points in the second quarter. He connected on five three-pointers in the first half.
Noblesville was able to stay in the game thanks to Xavier Hines getting on track in the second. He helped the Millers stay within striking distance in the first half despite Erekson scoring 24 points for Northridge.
In the second half, Noblesville did a good job of limiting Erekson’s looks. He cooled in the third, so Northridge went to Alex Stauffer in the paint. Stauffer showed a soft touch in the lane after he did a good job of sealing his defender.
Hines, Zack Johnson, and Jordan Schmidt kept Noblesville within one going to the fourth. Schmidt’s three-pointers gave Noblesville an extra boost in the stanza.
In the fourth, it was a back and forth game. Zack Johnson had a huge quarter. He scored eight points in the frame for Noblesville including a layup late to put the Millers up two points. Sam Smith had a couple big shots for Northridge when the Raiders were down.
With Northridge down two and 35 seconds left, Erekson found Stauffer for a layup to tie the game. On the ensuing possession, Noblesville threw a pass out of bounds. With a chance to win the game, Erekson was called for a charge while driving to the hoop with two seconds remaining.
In overtime, Zack Johnson scored on the first two possessions for Noblesville. That set the tone for the overtime period. Northridge was in a five-point hole at one point, but Erekson was able to get a steal, convert and layup plus the foul to tie the game with 1:13 left.
Seconds later, Johnson was fouled and hit two free throws. Noblesville went 6-6 from the line in the final 70 seconds to win 71-66.
Noblesville was led by Zack Johnson’s 27 points. He also had five rebounds. Xavier Hines had 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Jordan Schmidt and Brendon Fisher each had eight points. Alex Hunt added six points and eight rebounds. Eagan Keever-Hill had six points and three assists.
Jackson Erekson finished with a game-high 30 points. Sam Smith scored 14 on 4-8 from three-point range. Alex Stauffer added 13 points and six rebounds. Drew Seegert and Sam Vogt each had four points. Camden Knepp added one.
In the first game, Columbus North beat Andrean behind a great shooting performance.
With leading scorer Blake Barker struggling with his shot early, junior Nick Schiavello carried the scoring load early with nine points in the opening quarter. The lefty was highly efficient from 15-feet and in. Behind his play, North jumped out to a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After a Columbus North run stretched its lead to 25-12, Andrean sophomore Ben Jones connected on a couple three-pointers to get the 59ers back on their feet. Kyle Ross was steady in the half with nine points and four rebounds, but North did a good job of limiting his open looks.
North’s Barker found his scoring rhythm in the second quarter. He was 2-6 from the field to begin the game but then hit six of his next eight shots. He scored nine points in the second period to give North a 29-24 lead at the half.
Andrean senior John Carrothers didn’t score in the first half, but he came alive in the third. He scored the first four points of the half for Andrean then found Ross for a layup on the next possession. Despite the uptick spurred by Carrothers, Columbus North was able to extend its lead behind Trenton Kelley, Reese Harmon, and Schiavello.
Sophomore Reese Harmon had a big fourth quarter to seal the game for the Bulldogs. He was slashing to the basket for layups on a regular basis as Columbus North’s offense stretched the Andrean defense to its limits. He scored seven in the period to damper any Andrean comeback.
Columbus North won 62-52 behind 19 points from Blake Barker and 18 from Nick Schiavello. Reese Harmon ended with 11 points and five assists. Trenton Kelley added eight points and four rebounds.
Kyle Ross led Andrean with 15 points and eight rebounds. He only took eight shots in the game. Ben Jones added 10, and John Carrothers scored nine. Matt Lelito tallied six.
