In a meeting between strong 3A teams, Brebeuf had too much for Gary West Side.
Brebeuf had the ball for more than a minute on the first possession of the game thanks to patience and an offensive rebound. That was a sign of things to come for West Side. Brebeuf grabbed six offensive rebounds in the first quarter and forced the Cougars into four turnovers. Brebeuf’s Spencer Reist took advantage of the extra possessions to score nine points in the first period.
West Side senior Jimmie Washington was a bright spot for West Side. The lanky forward hit outside shots and scored at the rim to tally 10 points. He helped West Side stay within striking distance in the first half as Reist, Max Chaplin, and Simon Banks hit threes for Brebeuf.
The floodgates opened in the third quarter as Brebeuf hit six three-pointers – Chaplin had three and Reist had two. That took Brebeuf’s lead from seven to 19 in a hurry, and the Braves were in cruise control from there.
Brebeuf won going away, 62-40.
Spencer Reist led all scorers with 20 points. Max Chaplin had 17 points. Reist and Chaplin each hit five three-pointers. Simon Banks added 12. Jacob McNair had six points and four rebounds. Collin Wood recorded two points and six rebounds. Jay Higgins had four assists, four rebounds, and two points. Austin Ezell tallied three.
Jimmie Washington had 17 points for West Side. Quimari Peterson had six points, four rebounds, and three assists. Parion Roberson scored seven. Nathan Irby scored five, and Dominique Williams added four points and nine rebounds. Jessie Walker had one point.
