Carmel is the second-best team in the state and entered 9-0. Cathedral came in riding a nine-game winning streak. The run included a huge comeback to win the Bob Wettig Memorial Tournament against Zionsville. (Pictured: John Michael Mulloy)
Butler signee John Michael Mulloy set the tone early with three rebounds, two free throws, and a block in the opening minutes. Mulloy maintained that level of play throughout the first half and game. In the first half, he recorded a double-double behind 7-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Cathedral used a balanced attack early as Armaan Franklin didn’t find his shooting rhythm until later. In the first quarter, Justin Hensley, Haven Montefalco, and Ross Welch picked up the slack. Montefalco and Welch also had to battle Mulloy inside.
In the second period, Mulloy helped Carmel go on an 8-0 run to open a 22-14 lead. Armaan Franklin and James Franklin were able to get Cathedral quickly back in the game. The Irish did a lot of damage from the free throw line late in the half as well since both teams reached the double bonus.
Andrew Owens did a bit of everything for Carmel in the first 16 minutes. He hit a three-point late in the half to give Carmel breathing room at the break. Owens scored 12 points in the first half.
Carmel extended the lead to double figures in the third quarter. It was Karsten Windlan doing most of the scoring for the Greyhounds. After having three points in the first half, Windlan scored nine in the third period. He is tough to stop when a couple shots go down and his confidence goes through the roof. He caused Cathedral problems off the dribble throughout the second half.
In the final period, Armaan Franklin took over for Cathedral. He scored nine of Cathedral’s first 11 points of the quarter. After trailing by 13 late in the third, Franklin and Cathedral were able to get it down to six points midway through the fourth. Franklin scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter.
Once it became a two-possession game, Carmel spread the defense and forced Cathedral to foul them. Carmel converted on 16-20 free throws in the fourth quarter to win the game going away, 71-56.
Mulloy was great on the glass. He finished with 17 points and 21 rebounds. Cathedral doesn’t have much size, but Mulloy rebounded well in traffic while high-pointing the ball.
Windlan led Carmel with 20 points, and Andrew Owens added 18.
Indiana signee Armaan Franklin had 25 points as he went 11-13 from the free throw line. Haven Montefalco had eight points, nine rebounds, and four steals. James Franklin and Tayshawn Comer each had six points. Ross Welch finished with four points and nine rebounds.
Carmel moved to 10-0, while Cathedral is now 11-3.
