At the halftime break, it looked like Warren Central's winning streak was going to be extended. Lawrence Central answered the bell with a 7-0 run out of the intermission and turned in a fantastic defensive effort in the second half to win 54-44.
Warren Central entered the game with a 46-game winning streak. That's the third best in Indiana high school basketball history. In the first half, Warren Central locked down D'Andre Davis and Nijel Pack as the Warriors built a double-figure lead. Purdue football commitment David Bell hit his first four shots as he scored 10 points in the first quarter.
All the signs pointed to Warren Central rolling in the second half. The Bears showed toughness by climbing back into the game. Most teams struggle to find a rhythm against Warren Central's defense. That was the case in the first half as Lawrence Central only scored 20 points, while Davis and Pack were a combined 4-14 from the field. Despite that, the Bears found a way to get back into it in the third quarter.
Lawrence Central's defense changed the game in the second half. Warren was held to four points in the third quarter, and the shots started to fall for Lawrence Central as Davis, Pack, and Jacob LaRavia knocked down jumpers in the third. As the offense picked up for Lawrence Central, the defense also tightened. There were no open looks for Warren Central in the second half.
Early in the fourth quarter, the teams traded the lead as Nijel Pack hit a three-point for LC, but Jesse Bingham and Shawn Beeler answered with buckets to give Warren the lead. From there, Lawrence Central went on an 8-0 run with Pack and LaRavia doing the scoring. That was a common theme in the final period because Pack and LaRavia scored 17 of Lawrence Central's 19 points.
Lawrence Central's lead stretched to nine points with 75 seconds left. Things nearly took another wild turn as Jakobie Robinson was fouled on a three-pointer and converted all three free throws. On the ensuing possession, Lawrence Central threw an errant pass to Isiah Moore who stepped into an open three-pointer. That's usually automatic for Moore, but it rimmed off this time. If Moore's shot goes down, LC would have been up three with approximately 40 seconds left. Instead, Jake LaRavia sealed the game at the free throw line. He was 11-13 from the line in the game.
Lawrence Central walked away 54-44 winners. LaRavia led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds. Nijel Pack added 18 points and eight rebounds. D'Andre Davis finished with 10 in the win.
David Bell finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Malik Stanley had eight, while Jesse Bingham and Manuel Brown each had six points.
