Avon used a hot shooting second half to come from behind to beat Westfield Friday night.

Freshman Braden Smith connected on a three-point to open the game. He hit three three-pointers for Westfield in the first four minutes in the game. Behind Smith's shooting, Westfield jumped out to a 16-2 lead. The Shamrocks were clicking early.

To Avon's credit, the Orioles bounced back behind a balanced attack. Wendell DeMyers, Mason Miller, Antwain Harris, and Camden Melvin all scored late in the first quarter to get Avon back into the game.

Avon turned up the pressure in the second quarter. Sophomore Jayden Brewer turned two turnovers into dunks on his way to seven points in the half. But Westfield's Zach Banks slashed to the basket for a few baskets to keep the Shamrocks in front.

The game was flipped upside down in the second half. Wendell DeMyers converted a three-point play off a Westfield turnover to begin the half. Avon controlled the boards all game, but the Orioles cashed in a few offensive rebounds in the third quarter to take over the game. Antwain Harris and DeMyers seemed to get every rebound in the period as Avon outscored Westfield, 17-6.

For the game, Avon rebounded 50% of its own missed shots and 91% of Westfield's misses. It is rare to see that type of domination in a competitive game.

To open the final quarter, Camden Melvin scored the first five points to extend Avon's lead to nine points. Then Mason Miller caught fire to bury three three-pointers in a span of two minutes. Miller's shooting helped Avon push its lead to 17 points with three and a half minutes left.

Caleb Welch scored nine points in the final minutes to give Westfield a sliver of a chance, but Avon scored a couple baskets to hold on 68-57.

Jayden Brewer led Avon (7-7) with 15 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Mason Miller hit four three-pointers to score 15 points. Camden Melvin scored 13 points. Antwain Harris had 10 points and five rebounds, while Wendell DeMyers had nine points and 10 rebounds. JP Carroll was all over the place for four points, five rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

Zach Banks led Westfield (7-6) with 18 points and five rebounds. Braden Smith recorded 16 points, and Caleb Welch scored 15.
