With first place in the Hoosiers Crossroads Conference on the line, the 4A #7 Zionsville Eagles used stingy defense and near-perfect foul shooting to pick up a road win over 4A #10 Brownsburg Friday night.
Zionsville jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead before Cameron Alford got Brownsburg on the board with a three-pointer. The Eagles would lead by as many as nine in the first quarter as Purdue signee Isaiah Thompson would hit a pair of three-pointers and forwards Anthony Scales and Nathan Childress would combine for eight points in the opening period.
The hosts would respond by closing the half on a 6-2 spurt that put them down just four.
But poor shooting would do in Brownsburg. The trio of Cam Alford, Pierce Thomas, and Reis Thomas combined to go just 8-38 from the field as Brownsburg as a team shot less than 25%. The Zionsville 2-3 zone forced Brownsburg to fire away from deep, and while the Bulldogs got open looks, they failed to knock down several shots that would have helped their cause in the second half.
Zionsville was able to close out the game from the free throw line, as Isaiah Thompson was a perfect 14/14 from the free throw line. The Eagles as a team shot 21/22 from the stripe, with Ben Weidner going 5/6 in the fourth quarter. The Eagles were playing without usual starters Hogan Orbaugh and Brandon Vernon.
