In a game that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes, Bloomington South won an offensive shootout over Silver Creek Saturday night.
Down one point with two minutes left, Bloomington South had a long possession looking to regain the lead. But the set ended with a turnover, Zane Gross rushed the ball to the other end looking to extend Silver Creek's lead, but South did a good job of walling up against his floater from the block. Noah Jager grabbed the miss and sprinted up the court before finding Connor Hickman for a layup. Silver Creek had a chance to go up three points but instead found itself trailing by one with 100 seconds left.
After another miss and two free throws from Anthony Leal, Silver Creek had the ball down three with 35 seconds remaining. South's defense took away all options for 16 seconds before Silver Creek called another timeout. Out of the huddle, Brandon Hoffman ran a set play that saw Zane Gross run through an elevator screen to get a three-pointer at the top of the key. Leal read the play and took away the passing lane to Gross, but Trey Kaufman took advantage of the overplay by slipping to the basket for a layup.
Up one, Leal went back to the frow throw line to shoot a one-plus-one bonus. This time, he missed the frontend with just over seven seconds remaining. Silver Creek controlled the rebound and advanced the ball up the court. Ty Kessinger was stopped by Noah Jager at the three-point line. That's when Kessinger used a hesitation move but was called for a carry. On the replay, Kessinger's wasn't completely under the ball, but the dribble was discontinued for a split second.
On the inbounds pass, Silver Creek nearly forced a five-second violation before Jager alertly called timeout. South was able to get Grayson Rolen the ball sprinting to an empty court to run the clock out.
South won 77-76.
The first half was something that is rarely seen. The teams combined for 90 points. That's 90 points in 16 minutes of game time, and each time only had 30 possessions. That is an average pace for an Indiana high school basketball game. The shooting by each team was anything but average. Silver Creek had a True Shooting Percentage of 85.3% in the first half. Bloomington South's was 73.1%. It was shot-making at an incredible level.
Jack Hawkins and Kooper Jacobi were getting shots they like in the first half and made the most of it. Jacobi scored 12 in the first 16 minutes, while Hawkins recorded 11. Hawkins' outside shooting helped open the lane for Jacobi and Trey Kaufman.
Despite nearly scoring on every possession, Silver Creek only led by two points at halftime. That's because Anthony Leal and Connor Hickman found fantastic success as well. Leal and Hickman each scored 15 points in the first half. Hickman connected on a couple deep three-pointers, while Leal scored a chunk of his points off basket cuts.
The scoring and action didn't slow down until South became more deliberate with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Until then, the game had tremendous rhythm and superb shooting. In the end, South made one more play than Silver Creek, but the game was an elite high school basketball showcase.
Anthony Leal finished with 30 points. Leal was 9-18 from the field and 9-12 from the free throw line. Connor Hickman scored 21 on 8-14 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. Noah Jager added 13 points and 10 assists in the win.
Kooper Jacobi was 7-9 from the field and 4-4 from the line for 18 points. Trey Kaufman added 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Zane Gross had 17 points and four assists. Jack Hawkins shot 3-4 from three-point range on his way to 14 points. Ty Kessinger rounded out the Silver Creek scoring with 10 points.
