On a day that Beech Grove participated in Coaches vs. Cancer, the Hornets honored Matt English's legacy by competing hard and together in a win over Roncalli.
Senior John Parker powered Beech Grove to a good start. He knocked down three three-pointers in the opening period. As a team, Beech Grove shot 4-8 from beyond the arc in the quarter. Behind that and Roncalli turnovers, the Hornets led 20-12 heading to the second period.
Roncalli played with more composure in the second quarter as the Rebels cut down on poor passes which led to opening period turnovers. They also slowed Beech Grove's outside shooting. Aidan Looney pumped energy into Roncalli with his play off the bench including an alley-oop dunk. Roncalli pulled within 30-26 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the game was played within a couple possessions. Beech Grove led 38-36 late in the stanza before Parker scored on a layup then Gavin Hess converted two free throws and Vin Pich got a bucket after Josh Fryar forced a Roncalli turnover. Those six points gave the Hornets breathing room in the fourth.
Down the stretch, Beech Grove was able to get better scoring opportunities. Gavin Hess scored seven of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. Roncalli finished with 18 turnovers and went 0-10 from the three-point line in the second half. Those two areas allowed Beech Grove to win going away 61-44.
John Parker had 17 points and three steals to lead Beech Grove. Hess had 16 points, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals in the win. Jajuan Allison added 12 points despite being in foul trouble.
Jacob Denney scored 15 points for Roncalli. Anthony Donahue recorded 11 points and six rebounds. Johnny Brunk tallied seven points and four assists.
