Gary 21st Century junior Johnell Davis, Southridge sophomore Colson Montgomery, Central Noble senior Sydney Freeman, Northwestern junior Madison Layden and Bedford North Lawrence senior Jorie Allen join Parker as honorees for the week of Feb. 4-9 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Davis is the boys’ winner and Freeman is the girls’ winner for District 1. Parker and Layden, coincidentally from the same school, collected respective boys’ and girls’ honors for District 2. Montgomery and Allen received accolades for District 3.
Parker averaged 32.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in two victories for the Northwestern boys. He exploded for 41 points with eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks in a 90-79 victory over Blackford. The 6-1 guard followed with 23 points, eight rebounds, one assist, five steals and one block as the Tigers defeated Rossville 62-45 to improve to 18-1. Over both games, Parker hit 22-of-43 field goals, four 3-pointers and 16-of-17 free throws.
The 6-4 Davis averaged 31.0 points and 13.5 rebounds in two triumphs for the Gary 21st Century boys (14-6). He opened with 32 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and two blocks in a 73-67 decision over Gary West. Davis followed with 30 points, 12 rebounds, one assist and one block as the Cougars beat Kouts 73-65. In two games, Davis was 23-of-39 from the floor, 4-of-14 from 3-point range and 12-of-15 from the line.
Montgomery averaged 31.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in two victories for the Southridge boys (15-5). The 6-5 wing tallied 30 points with nine rebounds and four assists in a 64-43 triumph over Perry Central. He then totaled 32 points, eight rebounds and four assists as the Raiders outlasted North Daviess 55-44. Over two games, Montgomery sank 21-of-31 shots, 3-of-8 3-pointers and 17-of-24 free throws.
The 5-7 Freeman averaged 21.7 points and 6.3 assists in three games for the Central Noble girls (27-0). The Ball State signee opened with 16 points, four rebounds, six assists and six steals in a 55-30 victory over Bremen in a delayed sectional final. She produced 28 points with four rebounds, six assists and three steals in a 64-51 regional semifinal triumph over Hammond Noll. Freeman netted 21 points with six rebounds, seven assists and three steals as the Cougars beat North Judson 43-37 in a 2A regional final. In the three games, Freeman made 20-of-43 shots, 13-of-28 3-pointers and 12-of-14 free throws.
Layden averaged 22.0 points and 7.0 assists in keying the Northwestern girls (25-3) to three victories. The 6-1 guard tallied 13 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists and five steals in an 80-23 decision over Maconaquah in a delayed sectional final. The Purdue commit poured in 31 points with six rebounds, six assists and five steals in a 67-34 regional semifinal triumph over Gary West. She followed 22 points, seven rebounds, five assist and two steals as the Tigers topped Mishawaka Marian 47-29 in a 3A regional final. Over three games, Layden went 25-of-50 from the floor, 10-of-21 from distance and 6-of-7 from the line.
The 6-1 Allen averaged 20.3 points and 9.7 rebounds in three games for the Bedford North Lawrence girls (23-6). The Indiana University recruit netted 17 points with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 56-34 victory over Jennings County in a delayed sectional final. She produced 21 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and one steal in a 51-33 regional semifinal decision over Center Grove. She went down with a fight in the regional final, scoring 23 points with seven rebounds, three assists and one steal as the Stars fell 54-48 to Castle in a 4A regional final. In three games, Allen hit 24-of-44 field goals and 13-of-17 free throws.
This is the 11th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the seventh season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its seventh season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "train hard and eat fresh."
Winners in the Player of the Week are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 23. Boys winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 23.
