Trayce Jackson-Davis received his McDonald's All-American jersey in a pre-game ceremony then joined the rest of the Center Grove seniors in a dominating performance over Columbus North.
Senior Spencer Piercefield connected on a three-pointer during Center Grove's first possession of the game. It was a sign of things to come as the Trojans hit 11-19 from three-point range Thursday night. The Bulldogs showed fight early as sophomore Reese Harmon scored five points to keep Columbus North close.
The Bulldogs never had an answer for Trayce Jackson-Davis. Although Columbus North played a 2-3 zone, the Indiana University signee feasted at the rim. He threw down two dunks in the opening quarter on his way to eight first period points.
In the second quarter, sophomore Blake Barker buried back to back threes to pull Columbus North within four points. Barker had an excellent second period as he scored another bucket later in the stanza. Piercefield was able to push Center Grove's lead back to 30-21 with two three-pointers of his own. Then Jackson-Davis dunked two more times as the Trojans ended the first half on a 9-0 run.
The second half began with yet another Jackson-Davis dunk followed by a Columbus North turnover. The resulting Center Grove possession finished with the McDonald's All-American slamming home another two points. He scored a layup on the third possession of the half to give the Trojans a 42-23 lead.
Despite the blitz by Jackson-Davis, Columbus North responded with a run of its own. Nick Schiavello played a major role in the third quarter spurt as he hit a three-pointer, set-up a layup by Patrick McKinley, and scored a layup of his own. That run cut Center Grove's lead to 44-33 before junior Justin DeGraaf scored the last four points of the quarter to give the Trojans breathing room.
Early in the fourth quarter, senior Ben Greller sandwiched two three-pointers around the eighth dunk of the game from Jackson-Davis. That pushed the lead to 20 points for the first time. This time, Columbus North had no counter punch.
Trayce Jackson-Davis left the game midway through the fourth quarter with 22 points and five rebounds on 10-13 shooting.
The Columbus North starters were pulled around the same time, and Center Grove coasted to a 68-38 victory thanks to a 20-5 fourth quarter.
Spencer Piercefield finished with nine points, five assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Justin DeGraaf scored 11. Ben Greller finished with nine points and three rebounds. Ben Nicoson added five points and five assists. Charlie Bemis hit two threes for six points. Tayven Jackson and Landin Hacker each hit a three.
Blake Barker led Columbus North with 16 points on 6-10 shooting including 4-5 from three. Nick Schiavello had seven points, four rebounds, and two assists. Reese Harmon finished with five points, three assists, and three rebounds. Trenton Kelley had five points. Patrick McKinley and Cameron Ziegler each scored two, and Riley Ables tallied one point.
