The Panthers defeated Northview 63-24 to give Holmes his 807th career victory with Jack Butcher on hand to celebrate the passing of the torch. It is the twelveth straight win for South as they roll into the state tournament. It is a tournament that Holmes has won twice - 2009 and 2011. The 2009 state title helped Holmes win the USA Today National Coach of the Year award.
Coach Holmes is in his 36th season at Bloomington South. and 49th overall as an Indiana high school basketball head coach. He spent time at Tunnelton and Mitchell before landing in Bloomington. Over that time, Holmes has won over 70% of his games. His consistency has been remarkable.
While at Bloomington South, Holmes has coached 2009 Mr. Basketball Jordan Hulls and numerous Indiana All-Stars including his son, Jonathan. He'll likely have another next year in Anthony Leal after having Chance Coyle last season.
Bloomington South will be the favorite in its sectional next week, so it doesn't look like the wining will stop any time soon for J.R. Holmes.
